Applications are invited for the permanent position of Full Professor of Smart and Sustainable Cities at the UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy.

The School is a dynamic, research-driven school delivering excellent teaching programmes. The School is ranked in the global top 150 for Architecture and Built Environment (QS Global Rankings), ranking number 1 in Ireland. UCD Planning is an internationally renowned centre of excellence and a contributor to the European and global planning education and research agenda.

The School seeks to appoint an outstanding international scholar with a distinguished research record derived from a globally-impactful research programme in the area of smart and sustainable cities. They will provide academic leadership in the area, establish an internationally recognised smart cities research programme in UCD, lead grant applications for prestigious research awards, oversee high-quality impactful research, and develop strategic partnerships and links with industry. They will lead the development of a new graduate taught masters in smart cities and contribute to the strategic development of the School, including mentoring junior colleagues, and acting as a future Head of School.

As a senior leader in the Planning subject area, they will bring a vision for smart cities research and its integration into academic programmes, and provide a leading interdisciplinary role across the School and College. The University welcomes applications from internationally recognised scholars with prestigious funding awards and exceptional publication records.

Candidates with an expertise on one or more of the following, or related areas across the domain of cities and technology, are particularly welcome:

  • Urban science
  • GIS
  • Spatial modelling and visualisation
  • Earth observation and urban environmental modelling

Athena Swan The School is part of the College of Engineering and Architecture and was awarded an Athena SWAN bronze award in 2019 for their shared commitment to ensuring that their faculty, staff and students experience an equal, diverse and inclusive environment.

The appointee will be encouraged to take an academic leadership role within the School (for instance a fixed term role as Head of School), and to contribute appropriately to complementary subjects. Please note it is envisaged that this role will commence in line with the spring trimester 2023 (i.e the week commencing 23rd January 2023).

95 Full Professor C (2010) Salary Scale: €124,586 - €157,628 per annum

Appointment will be made on scale in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.
