Role responsibilities

 

  • Manage the Botanic Garden staff and volunteers, to ensure the Garden is delivering an excellent experience to its wide range of users and stakeholders.
  • Responsible for maintaining all plants within the Botanic Garden, including the public greenhouses.
  • Ensure the highest standards of horticulture, delivering the design and production of creative new planning and inspiring horticultural displays and initiatives.
  • Maintain up to date plant records, ensuring accurate and comprehensive labelling of plant collections.
  • Support the research and educational use of the Botanic Garden for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research, assisting in the development of projects linked to the Garden.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of events and visits by organisations or establishments.
  • Under the guidance and instruction of the Senior Maintenance Services Manager, plan and implement resource material to help to enhance the visitor experience for third parties.
  • Promote and foster positive and highly collaborative approaches to problem solving and project implementation, helping to motivate, mentor and coach other team members.
  • Supervise team members and volunteers, ensuring work streams and activities are allocated correctly and performance expectations are met.
  • Make decisions about the nature and level of problem solving, physical and analytical tools, techniques and protocols to deliver project and service objectives.
  • Identify, schedule and monitor reactive and cyclical planned maintenance and installation works, projects and associated resource for the Botanic Garden.
  • Provide regular status reports and identify risk management and contingency planning to other service staff, specialists, users and managers.
  • Provide information to promote the work of the Botanic Garden, through liaison with internal and external agencies, local authorities, industries and visitors and through appropriate media, including written material, social media, annual report, events and internal/external publications, where appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for monitoring and updating risk assessments and safety procedures, providing guidance to others where necessary.
  • Ensure adequate contractor control, and health and safety procedures are in place and monitored, to ensure compliance.
  • Keep abreast of changes to legislation and amendments to approved codes of practice and introduce appropriate measures to ensure compliance and delivery of best practice.
  • Develop, modify and optimise protocols and methodologies.
