The Data Manager (Careers & Student Success) will sit within the What Works team in the Student Success division, supporting the work of King’s Careers & Employability, Widening Participation (WP) & Social Mobility, and Student Transitions & Outcomes.  

The Student Success division is part of the wider Students & Education Directorate, a collection of wide-ranging professional services in place to support King’s students and their education. As a directorate we manage the student lifecycle from application to graduation and beyond, to ensure a coherent and seamless student experience and effective administrative processes, working closely with King’s faculties to do so. 


About the Role

This post is a key role within the Student Success Division focussed on taking an institution-wide approach to developing evidence-based analysis, monitoring, and enhancement of King’s careers and transition activities. The role will provide the university important insights through the analysis of key data sets, including Graduate Outcomes Survey, careers registration, continuation and attainment. This analysis will feed into regulatory and statutory commitments, including the Access & Participation Plan (APP) and the Teaching Excellence & Student Outcomes Framework (TEF).  

The postholder will also be the institutional lead for the Graduate Outcomes Survey and other careers data, and therefore, be responsible for making the statutory returns to HESA for the Graduate Outcomes Survey by building and improving the return process. They will be required to liaise with colleagues in Strategy, Planning & Analytics and Alumni Relations, responding to data requests and providing specialist advice when required.

This is a full-time post, but we welcome applications from candidates seeking a flexible work pattern within our necessary service operating hours.

Key responsibilities

•      To be the institutional lead on the Graduate Outcomes Survey and other careers and student success-related data  

•       To manage the process for the Graduate Outcomes Survey statutory returns, including cleaning & preparing information and meeting external deadlines 

•       To deliver insight and analysis using a range of data sources and tools to support key decision-making processes and strategic planning 

•       To be confident in data wrangling, e.g. extracting, transforming, and combining data from a range of internal and external data sources. 

•       To produce user-friendly dashboards and reports that effectively convey insights from complex statistical analyses to a variety of audiences, including non-technical internal staff 

•       To work closely with colleagues in King’s Careers & Employability, Widening Participation & Social Mobility, and Student Transitions & Outcomes to establish their requirements for bespoke data and analysis. 

•       To establish a positive data culture in Student Success by supporting data literacy of colleagues and communicating complex information suited to the audience. 

•       Possibility of managing a Senior Data Officer.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria  

  1. Confident in data analysis, including handling large data sets using relevant software, such as Power BI, Tableau, SQL, SSRS, R, Stata, SPSS, or Excel 
  2. Able to extract, transform and combine data from a range of sources. 
  3. Able to deploy a range of techniques to analyse, interpret and problem solve using data 
  4. Able to visualise data to convey the outcome of analysis 
  5. Able to communicate and translate the outcome of analysis and complex technical requirements in writing and verbally for non-specialist audiences 
  6. Experience of working with a range of different types and sources of data 
  7. Attention to detail, accuracy and completeness 
  8. Ability to manage own workload with minimal supervision 


Desirable criteria

  1. Postgraduate degree or qualifications in statistics, analytics, or a related field and/or relevant experience.  
  2. Knowledge of Higher Education  
  3. Experience of managing/leading projects 
  4. Ability to identify and manage the objectives, performance, and development needs of other.
