The Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics (AFM) Research Group at the University of Southampton is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our Experimental Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory. You will be working under the supervision of Dr. Sean Symon on the project “Augmenting flow simulations with experimental data to improve aerodynamic efficiency”. The aim of this research is to use experimental measurements of three-dimensional velocity fields with stereoscopic or tomographic particle image velocimetry (PIV) around a model vehicle to improve simulation-based predictions of mean flow quantities. The experiments will be conducted in the University of Southampton’s wind tunnel facility. The improved mean velocity field will be used to design a control strategy that reduces drag using synthetic jets on the vehicle. There will also be opportunities to supervise post-graduate students and to get involved in other projects in fluid mechanics in the fields of reduced-order modelling, flow control, wall-bounded turbulence, and diagnostics development.
The AFM research group is comprised of experts in theoretical, computational and experimental fluid mechanics and our aim is to provide an environment in which these different approaches can be combined and focused on particular topics of practical importance. You will join a vibrant team of other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working in different areas of fluid mechanics ranging from environmental flows to biomedical applications.
The candidate should have or be close to completing a PhD in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics or a closely-related engineering field. Experience with carrying out and analysis experimental work such as planar PIV is critical. Experience in manufacturing models and flow control devices is desirable. Strong communication and language skills, as evidenced by publications and presentations, are essential.
Please contact Dr. Sean Symon (firstname.lastname@example.org) for further details about the position.
Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
