Applications are invited for a 1-year, full-time Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London.

This position is funded by an ESRC research grant awarded to Professor Kathy Rastle in collaboration with Professor Marc Brysbaert (Ghent University, Belgium) and Professor Marco Marelli (University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy). The project asks what children learn about language through reading experience, and involves a combination of corpus analyses, computational modelling and behavioural experiments. This post will be focused on building distributional semantic models based on large corpora of children’s reading material.

Applicants should hold a PhD in computer science, psychology or cognitive science, linguistics or a closely related discipline. They must have outstanding programming skills, especially in relation to the processing and quantitative analysis of textual data, and experience in the cognitive modelling and/or computational linguistics field. Experience with distributional semantics and with working with behavioural data from psychological experiments is an advantage. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic about using open science tools to increase the transparency and impact of the project.

We offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including generous annual leave and training and development opportunities. The successful applicant will be based in Professor Rastle’s lab in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London. However, they will work very close with Professor Marelli and will be expected to travel to Italy as necessary.

The planned start date is January 16, 2023, although there is some flexibility for the right candidate.
