The Department of Medicine and Radiology is a large and diverse department in the Melbourne Medical School that undertakes research, postgraduate and undergraduate teaching within the University of Melbourne teaching hospitals. The Department of Medicine at The Royal Melbourne Hospital is the largest node of the Department, and includes staff and students working in the Melbourne Brain Centre at RMH.

About the Role

The Research Fellow position is a central role for this five-year, NHMRC-funded national project – the OnTRACK Centre for Research Excellence (CRE). The OnTRACK CRE focusses on the health and well-being of older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their families, carers and communities, with a particular emphasis on promoting brain health. You will work closely with the program’s chief investigators, co-researching agencies and service providers, key stakeholders and other program staff and students to implement the research program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Direct supervision of Victorian OnTRACK research staff and general oversight of research teams in other states (including NSW, Qld, WA) to ensure that all aspects of research are conducted in an ethical, valid, consistent and timely manner
  • Overseeing the design and development of research tools and methods for data collection, both quantitative and qualitative, such as audits, surveys, individual interviews and consultation forums, yarning or focus groups
  • Taking a lead author role in journal articles reporting on study findings or otherwise related to the OnTRACK CRE program
  • Budget monitoring, accountability and reporting, including risk identification and risk management

There are opportunities to directly engage in the research program where it aligns with your areas of interest, to build publications, profile, supervision and grant application expertise.

About You

You will possess strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to liaise and work effectively with a range of people. You will demonstrate excellent written communication skills and the ability to prioritise workloads, work well under pressure, and meet deadlines.

You will also have:

  • A PhD (or Masters) and relevant research experience  - ideally in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and/or dementia care/aged care.
  • Experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research and/or evaluation methods
  • Knowledge and understanding of the aged care system and/or primary care and community services contexts
  • Demonstrated skills in leading and motivating staff and/or tertiary students
  • Capacity to present effectively at conferences, forums and meetings
