We are looking to appoint an experienced Research Fellow for four months, in the first instance, to support the analysis of qualitative data from the ENABLE Study: understanding the importance of self-management support in people living with treatable but not incurable cancer https://www.southampton.ac.uk/msrg/ourresearch/macmillan-supported-self-management-study.page

You will join the team in the Centre for Psychosocial Research in Cancer: CentRIChttp://www.southampton.ac.uk/msrg  (Director Prof Claire Foster) in the School of Health Sciences.

As a Research Fellow on the study, you will be responsible for leading the planning, coordination and delivery of the data analysis of the qualitative longitudinal interview with the support of the Principal Investigator Dr Lynn Calman and the study co-applicants and team. You will be responsible for planning and conducting analysis and interpretation and dissemination of findings of this project.

The study focuses on the self-management activities of people living with cancer that cannot be cured. Serial qualitative interviews (with cancer patients, carers and health and social care professionals) and a Delphi exercise will help us better understand experiences and perspectives of people to identify the self-management outcomes that matter and produce evidence and insights to inform practice recommendations. The data collection has been completed and support is required for data analysis and interpretation.

You will have a PhD, or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in health services research/cancer care/palliative care/nursing/related health or social science subject and have:

  • Experience of research with vulnerable groups, for example, living with a life limiting condition or those at the end of life

  • Proven ability to organise a range of high-quality research activities to deadline and quality standards
  • Excellent communication and paper writing skills with a track record of published research. Track record of presenting to both specialist and non-specialist audiences including at local, national and international conference

It would also be beneficial if you had

  • Specific experience of longitudinal/serial interviews
  • Experience of working with a range of stakeholders to reach consensus
  • Knowledge and understanding of cancer survivorship
  • Experience of working with clinical centres building and maintaining relationships with clinical and research staff

You will need to work effectively with members of the study team including patient representatives, research and administrative staff. You will also need to work effectively with health care professionals and members of the public/service users to develop, deliver and disseminate the work of the research project.

An enhanced DBS check may be required for this role.

Applicants are strongly advised to contact Dr Lynn Calman, l.calman@soton.ac.uk,for an informal discussion.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
