Led by Professor Amanda Johnson, the School of Nursing & Midwifery is dedicated to Excellence in Caring and is looking ahead to create an exceptional student experience. The School offers students a personalised journey through contemporary and authentic evidence-based learning, looking at the entire student life-cycle and encouraging students to be life-long learners. Our leading simulation laboratories and clinical placements with our industry partners help produce highly competent and confident graduates, with the knowledge and skills to be work ready.

The School is renowned for a range of research activity that consistently achieves an outstanding world-class ranking in ERA. Research is conducted in collaboration with indigenous and local communities, national and global partners providing ground-breaking solutions to real world health challenges to better health. It actively responds to community requests, such as sending a team of experienced nurses to provide urgent vaccination assistance to vulnerable Indigenous communities in Walgett, a partner of the School.

The teaching team within the School is led by award winning academics who are experts in their fields. They are committed to teaching and learning strategies that develop nursing knowledge and the skills required to function as effective practitioners across a diversity of clinical settings.

You will be able to choose your primary workplace location at either the new Central Coast Clinical School in Gosford or the Callaghan Campus in Newcastle with an expectation to work across both campuses to share expertise in the undergraduate program and contribute to the online delivery of the post graduate programs. The leadership team is committed to providing opportunities for career progression and mentorship to achieve success.

As the Associate Professor Nursing in Mental Health you will bring your experience, commitment to quality learning and strong track record in research to inspire and engage our student community with their passion for nursing. You have the opportunity to play an active part in establishing a vibrant, enthusiastic, positive professional environment.

Nursing translates across the world and in terms of service and engagement you will interact with nursing and other discipline collaborators at a local, national and international level to benefit from reciprocated opportunities.

In collaboration with the University’s Department of Rural Health and rural and regional partners, you will support the College’s pledge to innovation in rural and regional initiatives, and you will a support our commitment to Indigenous teaching and learning.

  • Provide vision and leadership
  • Foster excellence in teaching and learning through appropriate curriculum development and delivery with a focus on Mental Health
  • Promote a collaborative and dynamic research environment through research collaboration, external grant income, publication outputs, and research higher degree graduates
  • Enjoy challenging the status quo and helping transform current practices
  • Provide academic leadership- to promote a workplace culture that embraces opportunities to benefit students, the School and the wider University.

How will you inspire us?

As an Associate Professor you will be a leading practitioner and/or scholar of significant national and international standing. You will demonstrate significant leadership in the School priorities for research impact and engagement, particularly in Mental Health. Your vision and innovative approach will drive the transformation of the School’s curricula and research direction.

You will have:

  • A PhD qualification in Nursing or health related discipline
  • Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with no restrictions, notations or conditions
  • The zest, vitality and expertise to be top of your field 
  • Demonstrated track record of high-quality research outputs and publications
  • Evidence of  success in securing internal  and external funding for research
  • Evidence of natural ability to guide, lead and support masters research projects, honours and HDR students to completion 
  • A track record of high student satisfaction scores
  • Evidence of an established professional network and strategic partnerships

The remuneration is Level D from $152,252 to $167,731 plus 17% super.
