Job description

The role  

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Communications Manager to join the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care (NMPC), King’s College London, to advise on and provide high-quality and strategic communications as an integral member of the Faculty’s management team.  

You will have extensive professional knowledge and expertise to ensure effective cascade and dissemination of university-wide messaging on areas of strategic importance; to support the delivery of the Faculty’s communications plans and strategies and to promote the work of the Faculty to a range of internal and external stakeholders in line with King's Vision 2029 and the university’s internal and external engagement strategy and business objectives.  

We are looking for someone with wide-ranging experience in developing and delivering coordinated and integrated communications strategies across a variety of areas and to diverse audience groups. 

You will be working proactively and autonomously across all areas of the Faculty to find opportunities where communications and engagement activities can add value and support the key objectives of the Faculty, its people and wider university. 

You will advise and support the Executive Dean and Faculty Executive in its key communications objectives and overseeing the delivery of effective internal (all student and all staff messaging) and external communications and PR.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract 

This is a full-time  post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Advise and work with the Executive Dean, the Executive Dean’s senior team and the Faculty Executive on devising communications objectives, in support of university and Faculty objectives and business plan, ensuring that communications are targeted, timely and relevant.

  • Lead the development, implementation and management of the Faculty communications strategy and plan and provide strategic direction to Faculty’s identity and coherence. This includes:

  • Developing a clear and integrated staff and student engagement approach working with key colleagues from across the Faculty and university.

  • Managing the planning and delivery of engaging communications campaigns and activities that promote and celebrate key areas of the Faculty, including developments and impact across research, education, international, equality, diversity and inclusion, and service to society. Reaching a diverse audience including students and staff internally and the nursing, midwifery, and palliative care trade press.

  • Compiling and editing Faculty internal messages on behalf of the Executive Dean and senior leadership team and have oversight of routine communications such as Faculty staff and student newsletters.

  • Working with Corporate Communications to support the development of an external communications and PR strategy plan to promote key strategic and research news opportunities to build the reputation of the Faculty within the university.

  • Line management of the Faculty Communications Officer, developing and setting objectives, routine work and supporting their professional development.

  • Manage the Faculty’s communications, ensuring effective cascade of messaging on areas of strategic importance for the university.

  • Manage the design and development of Faculty communications channels, including Faculty social media accounts, internal and external webpages, email messaging and virtual engagement/collaboration platforms (such as MS Teams) and provide advice on the effective use of print media for the promotion of the Faculty and its activities.

  • Utilise a range of channels to ensure timely communications that are consistent across internal and external and in line with the university’s objectives and messaging.

  • Work with relevant teams across the university to manage the Faculty webpages and ensure that content is coherent and consistent.

  • Work closely with Student Experience Manager, Associate Director (Education) and Vice Dean (Education), develop and be responsible for an overarching student communications approach, producing and advising on content for student channels and best practice

  • Identify reputational issues, escalating where necessary and advising on solutions, working closely with the university’s Corporate Communications Team.

  • Maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive information as appropriate

  • Act as a brand guardian across Faculty publications and online presence, ensuring adherence to King’s house style.

  • Build awareness and rapport between the communications team and the wider Faculty community to maximise opportunities and ideas for content and media engagement.

  • Undertake other activities, as directed by the Executive Dean, Vice Deans for Education, Research & Impact and International, Faculty Operating Officer, Senior Communications Business Partner or colleagues as appropriate.

  • To participate in Faculty, campus and university-wide events where possible and as required, which may include some out of hours work.

Essential criteria

  1. First degree or equivalent, significant relevant experience within communications/media/web development
  2. Experience of planning and implementing communication strategies and plans working with a wide range of stakeholders
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including editing and proof-reading to a high level.
  4. Ability to produce effective content for a varied audience, across different channels in a timely fashion and evaluating their success.
  5. Experience and skill in creating and managing web content and social media channels within a content management system and/or use of HTML
  6. Experience of absorbing and evaluating complex information from various sources to create clear and engaging content, preferably within an academic, or health environment
  7. Experience of influencing and negotiating with stakeholders, often beyond your immediate team, applying judgement and identifying solutions to complex situations
  8. Self-motivated, results oriented and with a ‘can do’ attitude
  9. Demonstrable ability to work under pressure with strong time management and proven ability to deliver to tight and sometimes conflicting deadlines
  10. Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write in different tones and styles or for different audiences
  11. Excellent IT skills, including Office, window, databases, internet, content management systems etc

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of working in the higher education or health sector
  2. A secondary-level qualification or demonstrable training in marketing, media, public relations or communication skills
  3. Experience of line management
