The Charles Wilson ‘Smart & Scale Up’ (S&S) SME Programme 

Durham University Business School (DUBS) was successful in obtaining £3.5 Million from Charles Wilson (until recently CEO of Booker Group) and his partner Dr Rowena Olegario to support a regional SME initiative called ‘Smart & Scale Up’ (S&S). This aim of this nine-year funding (starting from 2021) S&S initiative is to 1) Increase in innovation activities across the region, and 2) Support and development of new business models to support digital growth. To address these challenges, the project has identified four themes research themes: Emerging Technology adoption in SMEs; Supply Chains; Leadership; New Business Models. These four themes happen to be existing areas of expertise within the Department of Management & Marketing.

Additional aims of the programme (which will eventually extend over 2021-2029) are to:

  1. Provide insightful and practical support through rigorous and relevant research and professional development to regional and small businesses to underpin long-term economic recovery, redevelopment and resilience in the North East’s SME sector. 
  2. Inspire and further develop a sense of purpose across the School to make a difference to people’s lives and businesses through research, learning and deeper engagement.
  3. Support Durham University Business School’s ambition as a top European Business School. 
  4. Accelerate plans to recruit up to 10 FTE academic posts around Business Enterprise and Innovation  Research, including joint appointments with other departments and provide a platform for a multi-disciplinary cluster of expertise focused on SMEs. 
  5. Provide a strong foundation to position the School as an international centre of excellence in Business Enterprise and Innovation Research focused on technology, innovation and economic development, productivity, marketing, and leadership.
  6. Galvanise action in the North East to smart and scale up for economic recovery and resilience and development.

Charles Wilson Associate Professor in Management

The appointed candidate will be working with appointed Charles Wilson Professor in Management for the delivery of the objectives of the S&S initiative. Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in the broad field of Business Enterprise and Innovation. It is expected that the successful candidate will have a track record of working with and conducting research in industry in general and SMEs in particular. Additionally, the successful candidate will have the ability to take a leading role in the development of the Department’s research and teaching, and to fully engage in the services, citizenship and values of the University. The University provides a working and teaching environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate these key principles as part of the assessment process.

Key responsibilities:

  • Pursue research that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, commensurate with the Department’s continuing emphasis on international excellence; 
  • To make a significant contribution to the development of successful research project/ fellowship proposals in pursuit of suitable national and international funding opportunities to support research and end-user engagement. 
  • Deliver excellent teaching offering lectures, seminars and tutorials at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels. Contribute significantly to the development and delivery of high quality teaching, including the design of excellent learning environments and curricula. 
  • Contribute to enhancing the quality of the research environment in the Department, the wider University and beyond. Contribute to establishing and leading research groups within and beyond the University, and engaging in the mentoring of early career researchers; 
  • To attract and provide excellent supervision to research students, and to enhance the Department’s commitment to its vibrant and international postgraduate culture.  
  • Contribute significantly to the administrative functioning and collegial environment of the Department and wider University, undertaking leadership activities which support the functioning of the Department and wider University. 
  • To fully engage in, champion and enhance the values of the Department; 
  • Carry out such other duties as specified by the Head of Department. 

Person Specification

Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in the broad field of Management as it relates to Business Enterprise and Innovation, with the ability to teach our students to an exceptional standard and to fully engage in the services, citizenship and values of the University.

Research

Candidates must demonstrate a major contribution to their research field with impact beyond their own institution with outputs consistently recognised as internationally excellent, with some outputs either being world class or the candidate having the potential to achieve world class.

Essential Research Criteria 

  1. Qualifications - a good first degree and a PhD in Management or a related subject. 
  2. Outputs – significant evidence of internationally excellent research outputs, some of which are evaluated as world class. Candidates are asked to submit two research papers with their application (as outlined in the How to Apply section below). Candidates may additionally choose to submit evidence such as external peer review of their outputs.
  3. Personal Research Plan - evidence of a personal research plan which supports and enhances the department’s research strategy and the S&S initiative in particular. 
  4. Income Generation - evidence of leadership of or contribution to successful research projects and / or fellowship proposals.

Teaching 

Candidates must make a significant contribution to the development and delivery of high-quality teaching with demonstrable contribution to the design of excellent learning environments and curricula, including curriculum development, that enables students to achieve their potential.

Essential Teaching Criteria 

  1. Qualification - candidates must be or have the ability to attain the rank of Fellowship of the HEA the Higher Education Academy (https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/individuals/fellowship/fellow), which is the national body that champions teaching excellence (or equivalent). 
  2. Quality - making a significant contribution to the development and delivery of high-quality teaching at a nationally competitive level. Contribution to training, educating and mentoring other teachers in the department and/or the University in relationship to learning and teaching. (Candidates may choose to provide student evaluation scores and/or peer reviews of teaching). 
  3. Innovation – evidence of successful new programme development and innovate in the teaching methods for the design / delivery of high quality teaching at a nationally competitive level including lectures, small group learning and/or using technology or other techniques to enhance learning and/or assessment.
  4. Strategic – Significant contribution to the design and delivery of excellent teaching activities and the creation of learning environments that enable students to achieve their potential. 

Services, Citizenship and Values 

Candidates must actively contribute and engage in the administrative and collegial functioning requirements of the Department, Faculty and University, positively contributing to the University Values and to fostering a respectful environment; as well as demonstrating their commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

  1. Collegial contribution – a significant contribution to the collegial work and environment of an academic Department, Faculty or University.   3. Communication - candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to engage with a range of students and colleagues across a variety of forums. 

Desirable Criteria 

The desirable criteria for this post (for which candidates should provide evidence of some if not all criteria) are: 

  1. Research Leadership - significant contribution to establishing and leading research groups within and beyond the candidate’s institution, a recognised contribution to the development of the relevant research field, and engagement in the mentoring of early career researchers. Significant contribution to the development of successful research project / fellowship proposals. (Candidates may choose to include information about research group leadership, mentoring of research colleagues, invitations to external events, engagement with international networks or projects). 
  2. PhD Supervision – the successful recruitment and excellent supervision of PhD students.   
  3. Research Impact - evidence of a significant contribution to the development of research that has a demonstrable impact beyond the Candidate’s institution.    
  4. Income Generation - significant evidence of engagement in the development of successful research projects and quality research grant proposals.

Next Steps

About the Department

The Department is currently composed of circa 80 academic staff in the disciplines of Innovation and Technology Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, Marketing, Operations and Business Analytics, and International Business. Members of the Department conduct research in all of these areas. In addition, the Department hosts three cross-disciplinary research centres in areas of particular expertise: Innovation and Technology Management, Leadership and Followership, and Organisations and Society.
