The Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program offers a select cohort of talented university students unique access to specially designed courses, lectures, leadership experiences, networking, and assistance with applying for graduate school opportunities and scholarships. It accepts scholars from among the most outstanding students at the national UAE universities: the Higher Colleges of Technology, United Arab Emirates University, and Zayed University. The Scholars Program has been developed in close consultation with the Abu Dhabi Education Council, national extant universities and colleges in the UAE, and New York University Abu Dhabi. The Program Goals include:

• Academic and Leadership Development
  To offer an unparalleled and rigorous educational, cross-cultural, and leadership-development experience to outstanding and gifted university students in their third or fourth years of college study in the UAE.
• Network and Enrichment Opportunities 
  To provide access to NYUAD’s global research, educational, and leadership network, to foster greater awareness of international issues and challenges, and to develop in these Scholars the capacity to shape the future.
• Graduate Education Advising 
  To counsel and help prepare exceptional candidates demonstrating the highest merit and motivation for graduate and professional study at institutions of their choice. 

The Principal Instructor will oversee all academic duties for delivering the SMSP course, Public Speaking and Public Presentations, in collaboration with Assistant Instructors. The curriculum for this course will provide opportunities for students to receive public speaking instruction, assignments, and feedback aimed to develop and enhance public speaking skills.  Students will read, listen to, and analyze speeches from world-renowned public speakers; take part in individual and team-based public speaking exercises; and receive detailed feedback from the instructor, assistant instructors, and classmates on content, style, organization and delivery.  By the end of the course, students should be able to:  participate effectively in formal discussion and debate; develop and deliver a presentation or speech with clear structure and thorough content; recognize and correct major public speaking errors. 

Academic duties of the Principal Instructor include identifying and updating course goals and learning outcomes, syllabus and lesson plan creation, instruction, grading and evaluation, and office hours for student meetings. The course comprises approximately 8 sessions, totaling approximately 16 hours of classroom instruction for the duration of the academic year. The Principal Instructor will also support programmatic activities on SMSP weekends as necessary and participate in selection activities and graduation events, as needed.

Principal Responsibilities

• Work within the existing curriculum to create syllabi and lesson plans for 8 Public Speaking and Public Presentation sessions
• Ensure that all course materials are delivered and accessible to the Scholars, oftentimes through the NYU learning management system of Brightspace
• Incorporate the Public Speaking and Public Presentation curriculum into research/interest-based trips (if government and institutional regulations allow for travel due to Covid-19)
• With the Assistant Instructors, have at least one set of 1-1 meetings with the Scholars to discuss goals, progress, and challenges. Be available to individual Scholars or groups in need of assistance, as well as to other instructors undertaking cross-curricular or collaborative projects
• Work closely with the Assistant Instructors to review Scholar performance, provide feedback and grades, and evaluate course delivery and activities
• Provide Scholars with ongoing and regular feedback (oral and written) for the duration of the Scholars Program
• Attend any pre-program meetings and/or training sessions
• Participate in faculty meetings by providing detailed feedback on Scholars’ academic progress 
• Submit extensive and detailed written feedback on each Scholar to be used in crafting letters of recommendation for their graduate school applications at the end of every academic year
• Review, evaluate, and update course and teaching materials at the end of every academic year
• Attend and aid as needed with co-curricular events and activities throughout the Scholars Program, which will entail leading small groups of students on excursions and trips, or supporting the operations of the program if necessary
• Supervise and coordinate instruction with Assistant Instructor(s)

Length of Appointment: 

September to May of each academic year, with attendance at approximately two meetings prior to the program’s start for orientation activities. Apart from the Abu Dhabi portion of the program, research/interest-based trips to NYU’s Global Sites may take place for students, which the Principal Instructor may take part in.  Trips will only take place subject to government and institutional regulations due to Covid-19. Dates of the appointment are subject to change.

Qualifications

Required Education, Certifications, Licensing or Training:

• Advanced degree (Masters, PhD, or other terminal degree) in Professional Communications, Executive Leadership, or a related field
• Available to travel internationally, if necessary, during the dates listed above, if the program is delivered in person
• Ability to provide online instruction during the dates listed above if the program is delivered online

Preferred Education, Certifications, Licensing or Training:

• Advanced degree in English or Communications or a related subject
• College-level experience teaching public speaking and/or debating

Required Work and Related Experience

• Demonstrated interest in cross-cultural education and enthusiasm for teaching
• Experience supervising university students in a co-curricular setting
• Availability to assist with the administration of the program prior to the start of classes in Abu Dhabi

Preferred Work and Related Experience

• Work or internship experience teaching English to non-native speakers
• Familiarity with both online and face-to-face instruction
