The Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (Bell School) at The Australian National University is a world-leading centre for research, education, and policy analysis on international and Asia and the Pacific politics, security, diplomacy, and strategy. The Bell School comprises four multidisciplinary academic units: the Department of International Relations, the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Department of Political and Social Change, and the Department of Pacific Affairs.

The opportunity

Located in the Bell School, The Strategic Defence Studies Centre is seeking an accomplished academic leader with relevant discipline and policy expertise as their new Head of Centre. Reporting to the Director of the School, the Head will be responsible for the operational management, research, and educational leadership and strategic direction of the Centre, consistent with the strategic plan of the School. This will include national and international policy outreach and partnership with multiple stakeholders.

The Level E (Professorial) position is continuing while the role of Head, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre is for an initial 5-year term (potentially extendable).

Highly developed communication skills should be complemented by the ability to engage across the Centre and School to encourage integrative research and teaching frameworks. Excellent people management skills should be combined with a capacity for effective financial planning. The ability to build relationships while engendering a positive culture of collaboration will be essential.
