Programme of Research for Alcohol Care Teams: Impact, Value and Effectiveness (ProACTIVE study).

This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated person with excellent communication skills to join a highly experienced research programme funded by a National Institute for Health Research (21/614 HSDR) entitled Programme of Research for Alcohol Care Teams: Impact, Value and Effectiveness (ProACTIVE).

The successful candidate will co-ordinate the development of the first national public and patient network for the active involvement of people with lived experience in Alcohol Care Teams. They will need excellent communication skills to provide comprehensive and effective support to the research team to ensure the patient voice is integrated into all aspects of the Research Programme.

People with lived experience of alcohol dependence are particularly encouraged to apply.

An enhanced DBS check is required for this role.

ProACTIVE Research Programme

Alcohol-related hospital admissions in England continue to rise, with estimates that 10% of patients admitted to acute hospitals may be alcohol dependent. There remains considerable variation in provision of hospital-based Alcohol Care Teams (ACTs) in England, and a limited evidence base for understanding their clinical effectiveness. The NHS long-term plan has invested £26million to ‘optimise’ ACT through the development of existing services and the establishment of new teams in 25% of hospitals in greatest need by 2024. Jointly led by Professor Julia Sinclair, University of Southampton and Professor Thomas Phillips, University of Hull, this three-year research programme is a multi-disciplinary, integrated, mixed-methods study designed to evaluate the impact of ACTs.

The development of an ACT Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) Network to co-produce evidence and tools with patients, policy makers and commissioners about the best use of NHS funds in this area is central to the whole research programme.

This role is part-time (18 hours per week), and can be worked flexibly across the week (mixture of home working and at College Keep).

Interviews are expected to be held 1st September - 5th September.

The post is available from beginning of October 2022.

Informal enquiries may be made to Prof Julia Sinclair at julia.sinclair@soton.ac.uk
