Job description

The Department of Political Economy is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Dr David Hope for 2 years as part of the research project ‘The Political Economy of Knowledge-Based Growth’, which is funded by The Leverhulme Trust. This is a joint research project with Dr Hanna Kleider (KCL), Dr Niccolo Durazzi (Edinburgh) and Dr Sebastian Diessner (Leiden). The project seeks to deepen our understanding of how technological change has transformed the advanced democracies and has work packages focused on i) the measurement of the knowledge economy; ii) tracing the (social) policy foundations of (different types of) knowledge economies; and iii) unpacking the knowledge economy’s consequences for political and policy preferences.  

 

The successful applicant will have expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods and have a track record of producing high-quality academic research in comparative political economy or a closely related discipline. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the research across the project’s three work packages, including co-authoring the research outputs from the project and helping to organise conference panels and other events to disseminate the project’s findings. The successful applicant will also be expected to involve themselves in the academic life of the Department of Political Economy (e.g., attending departmental seminars, engaging with research groups etc.). We are particularly interested in scholars with expertise in comparative political economy and/or the k

nowledge economy, although this is not essential to apply. 

 

Applications will be considered from postdoctoral researchers and from current PhD students nearing the completion of their PhD. Applicants must have submitted their PhD by the time they take up the post on 1st October 2022.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract from 1st October 2022 to 30th September 2024.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Undertake research on the three work packages of The Leverhulme Trust-funded research project ‘The Political Economy of Knowledge-Based Growth’.  
  • Co-author the research outputs from the project. 
  • Organise conference panels and other events to disseminate the project’s findings. 
  • Present the research outputs from the project. 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

1.       PhD awarded or near completion in political science, economics, public policy, social policy, or a closely related discipline. 

2.       Demonstrated capacity for producing excellent research published, or capable of being published, with leading academic journals and presses. 

3.       Expertise in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. 

4.       Excellent communication skills (oral and written), and ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely. 

5.       Excellent workload and time management skills. 

6.       Experience in undertaking independent research. 

7.       Experience in presenting at conferences and/or research seminars. 

 

Desirable criteria

1.       Expertise in comparative political economy and/or the knowledge economy. 

2.       Expertise in at least two of the following research methods: Elite interviews, case studies, process tracing, regression analysis, survey experiments. 

3.       Interdisciplinary research interests. 

4.       Ability to conduct interviews in multiple languages. 

 

Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

 

The selection process will include a panel interview, conducted online if necessary.
