Project description

The trends towards personalised healthcare and wearable technologies for monitoring physiological parameters, fitness and performance are driving research into new flexible platforms for electronic systems. Soft, conformable and smart materials are finding applications in electronics, sensing (electronic, biological and chemical), flexible energy harvesting power supplies and energy storage. Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship studying the development of new flexible electronic systems focused on exploiting low-cost additive manufacturing processes and sustainable materials. Work would iteratively develop system components leading to small scale feasibility trials using sustainable manufacturing methods and materials suitable for scaling up towards mass production. The application of the system will be aligned with the activities of the Centre for Flexible Electronics and E-Textiles ( and should involve industrial partners looking to translate the research into innovations. The research could lead to new techniques and methods for monitoring individuals that will revolutionise applications such as healthcare, sports and fitness, and even large-scale power generation. 

Successful candidates would have a strong background in engineering and preference would be given to those with good understanding of electronics, materials and microfabrication/microsensing technologies. You will join the School of Electronics and Computer Science which is ranked 1st in the UK for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Guardian University Guide 2022) within the University of Southampton which is ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide. You will be supervised by world leading researchers in their field and join an exceptional and vibrant team of postdoctoral researchers and other PhD students. We will provide access to specialist equipment and laboratories (for example the Printed Electronics and Materials lab) for the manufacture and testing of flexible electronic systems. We will also support the development of your future career and be give you opportunities expand your experience and knowledge beyond the topic of the PhD project.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31st August 2022 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: Tuition Fees and a stipend (UK only) of £16,062 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
