This is a fixed term contract position for up to three years based in Southampton, working on Marine Robotics as part of an EU-funded Southampton-Cyprus collaboration.

You will join our collaborative team to provide technical support to the operation of subsea and surface marine robotics platforms. This role is part of an EU-funded collaboration between the Southampton and Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institutes (SMMI and CMMI), and will involve field campaigns in Cyprus and elsewhere.

The activities of the role include:

  • Assembly, calibration and operation of marine robotic platforms and their payloads.
  • Preparation, planning and participation in field trials in the UK, Cyprus and elsewhere
  • Support of researchers to implement new algorithms, methods and payloads
  • Joint fieldwork and training activities with Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute
  • Drafting technical notes and reports; maintenance of data storage systems

This role provides an opportunity for you to be involved in marine robotics research and development, as part of SMMI’s wide community of scientists and engineers focussed on ocean challenges. The Marine Robotics group is supported by a new laboratory, has a range of vehicle and payloads in operation or development, and operates within the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering.

The link to CMMI provides an opportunity to conduct research with a growing international team in locations of unique underwater diversity and heritage. The EU-funded project includes opportunities for joint training and knowledge transfer across a wide network of partners.

You will be based in the attractive research environment of our new Boldrewood campus, supported by the latest facilities and with access to a variety of staff development opportunities.

To be successful you will demonstrate skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 with proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles and job-related training Science/ Maths/ Engineering along with practical knowledge of electronics, mechanical and optical engineering.
