Job description

Reporting to the Director of Governance, the Governance Manager assists with supporting the efficient operation of senior governance services at the College. The Governance Manager provides business and secretariate support for governance committees including preparation and distribution of meeting papers and related documents, taking notes and drafting minutes. The Governance Manager also manages communication of governance and policy information through the College’s website, manage corporate governance initiatives and provide advice and guidance on technical aspects of governance.  The Governance Manager is responsible for managing the conduct of elections to the Academic Board and to Council

 

This post will be offered on an  a fixed-term contract for 12 months

A secondment would be welcome.  Flexible working is permitted in line with the College's policy.

This a 0.80 FTE contract

 

Key responsibilities

•        Management of governance committees as assigned  

•        Drafting papers, procedures, policies, regulatons on matters of governance, liaising with senior managers, the Principal's Office and other colleagues and external experts as required 

•        Managing the university’s ‘Governance Zone’ to provide a single point of reference for all regulatory and policy matters 

•        Undertake annual governance tasks as required, such as:  maintenance of governor register of interests, managing the Fellowships & Honorary Degrees process 

•        Support the Director of Governance in election and appointment processes for new governors and committee members 

 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

  • Good understanding of the principles of good governance and their application in a higher education setting 
  • Well-developed understanding of regulations, policies and procedures and the implications of non-compliance with internal and external regulatory frameworks 
  • Experience working in a large, complex organisation with demonstrated ability to engage with top management and leadership. 
  • Able to deliver in a complex and pressurized environment with tight timelines 
  • Experience in a higher education environment and/or understanding of recent developments in higher education governance and legislation. 
  • Proven ability to build and sustain relationships across a diverse organisation and with external stakeholders 

Essential criteria  

1.      Undergraduate degree or equivalent 

2.      Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present detailed and complex information to a wide audience. 

3.      IT literacy across the Microsoft Office suite 

4.      Ability to interact with senior management and distinguished independent members 

5.      Rigorous, analytical approach with an eye for detail 

6.      Flexibility and diplomacy.  

7.      Demonstrated commitment to a high service standard.
