Job description

The Music Department at KCL seeks to appoint two music studies scholars with interests in the nineteenth, twentieth and/or twenty-first centuries; expertise in film music, opera, popular and/or contemporary musics may be an advantage, without preference for world region, tradition or approach. 

 

The successful candidates will teach or co-teach modules in their areas of specialism on our BMus and MMus programmes. Our broadly defined modules are not restricted by traditional disciplinary boundaries and facilitate research-led teaching and innovative approaches to delivery. Postholders will also supervise undergraduate and Masters dissertations and contribute to department administration.

 

While these are primarily teaching roles, postholders will be given every opportunity to participate in the research culture of the department and the wider university. Applicants must be available to start on September 1 or soon thereafter and to begin teaching on-campus in London at the start of term.

There are two part-time posts (50% full-time equivalent) which will be offered on fixed term contracts for one year. Interviews will be held in the week of July 25.

 

 

Key responsibilities

  • To contribute to the Department's teaching activities primarily on the BMus and MMus programmes.  
  • To draw on the applicant's own scholarship, understanding, and knowledge of their chosen areas of expertise to support their teaching. 
  • To participate actively in the Department's everyday administrative functions. 
  • To undertake the supervision of student research at BMus and MMus levels. 
  • To contribute to the on-going development and design of modules, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning. 
  • To undertake pastoral care as a personal tutor. 
  • To participate fully in assessment and examination processes and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students. 
  • To act undertake administrative responsibilities in the department. 
  • To engage in professional development as appropriate. 
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department 
  • The Academic Education Pathway allows 80% of a staff members’ time to be dedicated to Teaching, Leadership and Administration, and 20% dedicated to Scholarship that is Education focused. 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

1.       PhD in a field related to Music and a developing record of professional activities and/or publications as evidence of scholarship 

2.       Demonstrable ability to teach modules on music in the nineteenth, twentieth and/or twenty-first centuries (without preference for world region, tradition or approach) 

3.       HE teaching experience including module design, preparation and assessment; supervision of student research; and teaching-related administration 

4.     A proven ability to work successfully with a wide range of people, and a willingness to contribute to the pastoral care of students as personal tutor in other roles

 

Desirable criteria

1.       Training in University-level teaching 

2.       Research interests in film music, opera, popular and/or contemporary musics (without preference for world region, tradition or approach) 

3.       Administrative experience in area such as admissions, recruitment, diversity, library or staff-student liaison 

4.       Ability to train students in basic sound recording/editing and to oversee the provision of this and/or other technology enhanced learning
