Research Fellow in Early Modern Maritime History on AHRC project: ‘English Merchant Shipping, Maritime Communities, and Trade from the Spanish Armada to the Seven Years War, c.1588-c.1765’

University of Southampton – School of History

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow (3-years) to work on an exciting new AHRC-funded project, hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Southampton. The project will chart England’s (later Britain’s) growth as a global trading nation and maritime power (c.1588-1765), challenging pre-existing notions of how and why the nation’s maritime empire emerged as it did, as well as investigating the country’s merchant fleet, overseas and coastal trade, and the maritime community on both land and sea. The project will draw significantly on research methodologies including Social Network Analysis (SNA), prosopography, Handwritten Text Recognition, and, more broadly, digital humanities. A key element of the project is a range of associated activities with national and regional museums and local government organisations.

With a strong record of interdisciplinary research, you will also have familiarity with computer databases and/or digital humanities research methods. A demonstrably high-level of skill in early modern English palaeography is an essential requirement of the post. Applicants with knowledge of the economic, social, and cultural history of the period, are particularly welcome to apply. An important part of this role also involves working closely with the project’s partners, and applicants with experience in undertaking impact and public engagement work are also encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will be part of a large cross-institutional and interdisciplinary research team, be based at the University of Southampton, and will be supervised by Dr Craig Lambert and Dr John McAleer (Department of History).
