Key Position Responsibilities

As the Academic Support Advisor, you will be the primary contact person for all incoming International students who have enrolled within IT/Maths topics and courses in the College of Science and Engineering at Flinders University.

Based at our Tonsley Campus, you will help build and maintain an on-site international community that is welcoming, supportive, and inclusive. You will also support student progress, ensuring students are engaged in their studies and assist Topic Coordinators by running regular consultation session for generic skills in IT/Maths courses.

The support you will provide include:

  • Assisting students with the general study skills, understanding assignments, exam preparation, research and referencing skills and critical thinking
  • Provide support with grammar, English language, assessment tasks and referrals to the Student Learning Support Service
  • Provide support for topic and course co-ordinators and lecturers for generic queries pertaining to either IT/Comp or Engineering and Design Topics
  • Assist in building student community at Tonsley through regular consultation sessions and events.
  • Provide FLO training and advice and work with CILT as needed to ensure comprehensive FLO support is provided to students
  • Organisation of and attendance at regular social events and co-ordination staff attendance
  • Assist in connecting students into the whole range university support services as needed

Key Position Capabilities

You will be an effective communicator, with well-developed written communication skills, including having well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to a diverse range of students at all levels. You will be expected to show an in interest in, an understanding of, and have empathy for the issues facing students as they progress through the student life cycle.

You will also, at a minimum, hold a Bachelor (Hons) or Masters (Science) qualification or in related area, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and/or training. Experience with Flinders Learning Online (FLO) is highly desired.
