Job Description

The CBmE was established in September 2006 in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine through a generous gift by the Chen Su Lan Trust. We work to develop understanding, capacity for good judgement, and sound ethical practice in the context of healthcare provision, biomedical science, and health-related policy development. CBmE is a thriving centre for learning, teaching and research relating to ethical and legal aspects of healthcare and biomedical sciences. We study issues of broad international significance with a particular interest in learning for and from Singapore and Asia and work collaboratively with academic colleagues across and beyond NUS, and with key stakeholders in the healthcare sector and biomedical science and policy communities. CBmE is looking to fill a position for a Research Assistant in the SHAPES (Science, Health and Policy-relevant Ethics in Singapore) Programme. SHAPES aims to build bioethics capability that supports and facilitates research excellence. We work with stakeholders to support development and implementation of policy related to the ethical conduct, governance and translation of clinical research. SHAPES also develop scholarships and thought leadership related to innovative technologies and therapies.

SHAPES’ research area include ethical challenges of clinical research and trials, as well as AI implementation, regenerative medicine, and neurobiology. The work involves reviewing the literature, data gathering and analysis, and translating existing scholarly work and guidance into local guidance for policymakers and health researchers. Also, novel work will be developed and translated into guidance and education materials.

Duties

The Research Assistant (RA) is expected to undertake the following:

  • Assist with research and with stakeholder engagement in SHAPES’ projects.
  • Organise and develop materials for symposia and workshops related to projects undertaken by SHAPES.
  • Collaborate with the SHAPES administrator in managing aspects of the grant.
  • Participate in and contribute to SHAPES activities, including journal clubs, presentations and other events.
  • Contribute to SHAPES newsletters, social media engagement and other outward-facing communications.
  • Contribute to the development of new projects and activities.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree (preferably Honours) in a field relevant to the above activities, including but not limited to: bioethics, philosophy, sociology, science.
  • Advanced writing skills.
  • Ability to engage in normative analyses.
  • Ability to work in a team.
