We have a vacancy for an associate professor in Maintenance and Safety at Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at NTNU.

The position is a full-time permanent position. You will join the Reliability, Availability, Maintenance and Safety (RAMS) research group. The RAMS group is focusing on generic, and application directed research within the field of safety and reliability of complex systems, i.e., reliability assessment of barriers and safety systems, implementation of reliability in the development of new systems, risk assessment and risk analysis, asset/maintenance planning, optimization and management, and safety and security assessment of complex systems.

Maintenance and Safety, which include maintenance management/modeling, and risk & safety analysis, are vital in ensuring the long-term success of production stability and significantly minimizing the chances for unplanned downtime and other serious consequences. Efficient maintenance and safety strategies are able to improve the operational efficiency of plant facilities, which contributes not only to revenue by decreasing operating costs and improving the quality (and quantity) of manufactured products, but also to enhance productivity and minimize human/technical error, and thus avoid serious consequences and improve workplace safety globally.

The position reports to the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

  • you are expected to strengthen the department’s research activities in maintenance and safety for the industry of clean energy like offshore wind, hydrogen etc. The work shall in particular support the department’s research and education initiatives on maintenance management and risk & safety analysis
  • the research activities of the department rely crucially on external projects/funding. You are therefore expected to work actively to acquire research grants and other external income from the Research Council of Norway, Nordic and European research and educational agencies, and other available sources. You are expected to play a key role in developing prototype digital solutions, and in generating/winning funding for the department
  • you are expected to build relationships in both industrial and academic domains to give directions to projects and stimulate collaboration and interaction in a positive way
  • you are expected to contribute to an excellent learning environment, in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders. You are expected to teach courses at all levels and should supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students according to your research qualifications
  • you are expected to contribute and develop research-oriented laboratory activities in the fields of maintenance management and risk & safety analysis

Required qualifications 

The position of Assistant Professor within (subject area) requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

  • your comparable academic work must be within the field of RAMS (or a comparable relevant field). Relevant academic fields include maintenance management/modeling, and safety and security assessment of complex systems
  • you need a PhD in an engineering or system engineering discipline with documented competence in maintenance management and/or risk and safety analysis. Preference backgrounds also include industrial working experiences
  • you need a strong background of RAMS and well-developed industrial networks, and interest in the development and application of new and emerging technologies that are relevant for maintenance and safety
  • your research must be documented and of high international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Production must reflect an independent research profile and show the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for the granting of professorial competence. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within relevant subject areas. The greatest emphasis is placed on academic work during the past five years
  • you need strong ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development work, and in obtaining external funding for research. Emphasis will also be placed on a documented commitment to teaching, development of teaching materials, and supervision of students at all levels related to maintenance management/modeling and risk & safety analysis
  • excellent written and oral English language skills

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred qualifications

  • strong experiences in research proposals, project application and lab development and management are preferred
  • pedagogical skills and qualifications will be emphasized. The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, forms of presentation for the academic works, experience in teaching, supervision of doctoral and master’s degree subjects as well as other types of pedagogical background
  • it is expected to be a good collaborative characteristic within colleagues

  • capability and willingness to extend your own competence into new areas
  • ability to maintain and develop a strong network in both academia and industry
  • service minded towards students and other “customers”

We offer 

Salary and conditions

Ina a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 550.000 – NOK 750.000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.   

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
