The successful applicant will be required to undertake online and in person teaching, and teaching-related work, in the areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Deakin University and Deakin’s offshore teaching partners in China and India. The appointee will support the development and delivery of Deakin units to undergraduate students in Engineering programs at Deakin and overseas with a particular focus on contribution to teaching teams in first and second-year Engineering. With support and guidance of more senior academic staff and travel funding support from the University, the appointee is expected to develop expertise in teaching to diverse cohorts of students and to develop links with unit teams at Deakin and offshore teaching locations. English is the medium of instruction at Deakin and in offshore teaching locations.

Your key responsibilities will include the requirement to:

  • Maintain appropriate discipline knowledge
  • Develop effective learning materials and activities as part of design team or with guidance from Unit Chair
  • Demonstrate awareness of ongoing innovation in curriculum design
  • Deliver effective teaching practices within unit
  • Integrate industry, clinical and/or research practice to teaching
  • Work collaboratively as part of a teaching team
  • Constructively review and refine own teaching practice to help maintain teaching quality standards
  • Suggest approaches to innovate teaching practices to improve student success and engagement
  • Conduct high-quality research, scholarship and creative activities generating high impact outputs, with mentorship
  • Engage collaboratively to participate in novel and high-quality research or creative activities
  • Communicate outputs, including as part of team
  • Ensure impact of academic activity on the field and the community

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline and/or other relevant qualifications and experience
  • An excellent record of scholarly learning and teaching in undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs, including innovative curriculum design and unit chair/coordinator duties
  • Ability to design and implement engaging learning activities that develop both technical knowledge and professional skills like communication and teamwork
  • Commitment to providing high quality supervision and guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate project students
  • Emerging research and scholarship through publications, and/or exhibitions as appropriate to the discipline
  • Ability to make a contribution to communities through research and teaching
  • Capacity to contribute to teaching, research and administration
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues
