The Department of Architecture is an academic unit in the Faculty of Art Design and Architecture (FADA) that offers comprehensive programs in architecture. Its program offerings a have a dual focus that is geared towards enabling students to achieve professional architectural qualifications as well as access to postgraduate learning opportunities. A transformative teaching philosophy informs the department’s pedagogic practice and research agenda in response to its location within the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the city of Johannesburg. The department aims to enrich its academic profile in order to contribute to the development of UJ as the pan-African epicentre of critical intellectual inquiry.

Job Description:

In line with the DHET's flagship academic recruitment programme (nGAP), the Department of  Architecture (DOA) at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to make a Lecturer appointment. We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified, and ambitious designated South African architect to develop and expand the school’s current teaching and research interests/specifications.


  • Teach and assess architectural design at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Contribute actively to research in his/her specialist field(s);
  • Publish research including the work of his/he, student, in the Unit. using appropriate channels (peer· reviewed publications and conference proceedings} as well as exhibitions, new forms of media and speaking engagements.
  • Share in the administration and management of the DOA and the wider faculty.
  • Participate in official meetings of the DOA and Faculty.
  • Have an active presence as a public intellectual
  • Supervise postgraduate students within the appropriate programme offerings.
  • Develop key national and international links and collaborative opportunities.
  • Actively contribute to the development and growth of the DOA, including Its newest initiative, transformative pedagogies.

Minimum requirements

  • A master’s in a relevant discipline (architecture, landscape architecture or urban design) is required. The candidate will be expected to have registered for a PhD, or commitment to register soon. OR the successful candidate will be expected to register for a doctoral degree soon after commencement of duties.
  • An in-depth and current knowledge of contemporary architecture design, history, and theory.
  • Experience as a researcher.
  • A record of collegiality, collaboration, and initiative
  • At least two years' teaching experience at the tertiary level.
  • An understanding of the principles of design research.

  • Excellent communication skills in academic English
  • Proven planning and administrative skills.
  • Ability to monitor and coach student performance and provide critical feedback in an objective and professional manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborative effectivity with people from a wider range of backgrounds.
  • Proven teaching ability and competence at postgraduate supervision


  • A strong understanding of contemporary and emerging forms of research within the broad field of the
  • Built environment disciplines.
  • Familiarity with Elective/Unit System teaching methodologies.
