About the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences has an enviable research record and is the University of Melbourne’s largest faculty in terms of management of financial resources, employment of academic and professional staff, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate (including research higher degree) students and the conduct of basic and applied research. The Faculty’s 2013 gross revenue was in excess of $550M. Approximately 40% of this income relates to research activities.

About the Role

We have 2 x 24-month fixed term contract positions as Research Assistant available within the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine (CHESM) in the Department of Physiotherapy. People with a background in a health-related discipline will be considered for the position.

In this role, you will work on clinical research in the area of musculoskeletal conditions, in particular patellofemoral pain and/or osteoarthritis. The focus is on the role of non-drug, non-surgical treatments such as exercise, footwear, diet, education, and self-management strategies. You will directly report to the leaders of the Musculoskeletal Research Program. You will also need to obtain a current working with children’s check before commencing in the role.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • Contribute to specific current and planned musculoskeletal research projects
  • Collecting and processing clinical trial and other data from research participants
  • Draft documents including study protocols and outcome measures
  • Actively participate in CHESM and The Department of Physiotherapy activities
  • Actively contribute to the engagement activities of CHESM

About You

You are a keen problem solver with the ability to follow through detailed projects effectively. Your initiative and high-level organisational skills will see you succeed in this role, in achieving project goals and meeting agreed deadlines. You are confident working independently but also love to collaborate within a team environment. You will have a strong commitment to the highest standards of scientific and ethical integrity and the ability to strictly adhere to study protocols.

Ideally, you will further have:

  • Undergraduate degree in a health-related discipline
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate with a range of stakeholders
  • Excellent computer skills particularly with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
