The Department

Computing and Information Services (CIS) is Durham University's central IT department. It has an annual operational budget in the order of £10m, multi-million pound programmes of change within year, and approximately 140 staff. The Senior Leadership Team report directly to the Chief Information Officer with the following portfolios: Strategy and Change; Operations; and Information Systems. CIS provides academic, teaching and administrative services across the University that underpin the day-to-day activities of the whole organisation.

Recent infrastructure improvements include investment in a new network backbone, including new cable runs throughout the city to all of the University's core buildings, new scalable user facing storage, and a new hosting environment. Corresponding business led investment also continues to be made with a new Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning suite, investment in research administration, and maximising the breadth of opportunities available to the University through Office365, alongside numerous other important initiatives. Cyber security is a key departmental priority going forward.

CIS is a friendly, but demanding department, where much is expected and can be achieved by competent, self-motivated individuals who are demonstrable in their team work ability.

Role purpose

The post holder will be involved with the planning, implementing and controlling activities to combine technology components to create operational systems, products or services within the Information Systems division.

This will include, but not be restricted to:

  • The development of processes and procedures for the automation and continuous integration of software related and data related packages
  • building and operating an ever maturing, continuous integration (CI) capability employing version control
  • ensuring security and privacy requirements are considered for all systems integration needs
  • ensuring all integration outputs satisfy Durham’s architecture and security standards
  • monitoring and controlling all integration activities ensuring documentation remains accurate and current, and in itself, complies with version control, with document accessibility available to approved colleagues
  • keeping stakeholders informed and providing feedback into risk management processes
  • apply incident management processes for major systems integrations

Core responsibilities:

  • Experienced IT practitioner, involved in the planning and co-ordinating of software and data integration activities, projects and work streams with inter-related activities.
  • Plan and organise own workload with or without involvement with project work streams.
  • Assist with the performance monitoring of IS integration services, noting problems and trends, and where appropriate, undertaking corrective action, ensuring escalation if unsure of action to be taken.
  • Work collaboratively across the organisation and/or externally with colleagues and stakeholders to deliver a service.
  • Develop software and data integration components to deliver value to stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance and advice to resolve problems and queries for a broad range of service users.
  • Identify priorities and monitor processes and activities to ensure success.
  • Provide demonstrations and instruction to others outside the team.
  • Capture CIS software and data integration requirements from users and work with colleagues to translate these into recommendations for future service provision.
  • Advise others and make recommendations into work processes and procedures for consideration by senior management to improve services.

  • Contribute to business meetings, working groups and committees to help shape service delivery and stakeholder expectations.

  • Support the capture of business requirements from users and work with colleagues to translate these into recommendations for future service provision.

Role responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise to enable the configuration of system components and equipment for systems testing.
  • Resolve queries and requests for information and advice, including investigating incidents and problems relating to IS owned systems and identifying appropriate actions to take, and escalate more specialist and complex queries or issues to more experienced CIS team members.
  • Collaborate with other CIS teams, and where appropriate, 3rd party specialists, to develop and agree CIS software and data integration plans and report on progress. 
  • Define complex/new CIS software and data integration builds. 
  • Ensure that software and data integration test environments are correctly configured. 
  • Design, perform and report results of tests of the software and data integration build. 
  • Identify and document software and data integration components for recording in a CIS configuration management system. 
  • Recommend and implement improvements to integration level processes and tools.
  • Carry out fault diagnosis relating to complex problems, record and reports on the result of tests, in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proactively assist colleagues to achieve operational service requirements, planning, carrying out and documenting evaluations and tests to ensure stakeholder requirements are met.
  • Apply technical knowledge and skills to test, monitor, patch, and repair IS technology solutions and services
  • Manage and monitor the use of systems, applications and resources.
  • Deliver appropriate demonstrations to service owners, users and support teams as necessary.
  • Follow CIS standards to ensure security, safety, integrity and viability of IS facilities 
  • Liaise with outside agencies, suppliers and visitors to ensure the safe and secure delivery of IS services.
  • Document all work in accordance with agreed team, IS and CIS standards and assist in the documentation of approved changes in accordance with CIS’s change management policy.
  • Design and produce appropriate integration focused management information reports that can be shared with team, IS and CIS management.
  • Work independently or with other staff or contractors across the University to deliver integration services and projects.
  • Liaise and network with contractors and third-party suppliers to facilitate the exchange of information, and help focus joint effort with projects and service delivery.
  • Build, test and implement equipment, facilities, technical and virtual architecture solutions.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders and client representatives across the University to inform and advise about key technology changes.
  • Manage and monitor systems to ensure safety, security and compliance with regulations for the University infrastructure.
  • Engage with internal and external networks, exchanging knowledge and information to provide input into the planning and development of future projects and services.
  • Perform maintenance procedures and tasks and takes action to respond to vulnerability issues and security incidents.
  • Plan, review, monitor and investigate mechanisms to ensure all organisational stakeholder requirements have been met.
  • Maintain asset registers ensuring that the administration of the acquisition, storage, distribution, movement and disposal of assets is documented.
  • Demonstrable ability to use a range of virtual or digital tools and services.
  • Take responsibility for carrying out more specialist risk assessments and incident resolution.
  • Record data and information accurately, provide reports and distribute information to key stakeholders in the process or service.
  • Any other reasonable duties.

Specific role requirements

Depending on prior certification attainment, the post holder will be sponsored to undertake a course of study, that will lead to the award of Level 4 Software Engineer or Level 4 DevOps Engineer.

Whilst working in CIS the hours of service are currently 8.00 am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday but a flexible approach to work will be required to ensure that all duties are covered. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required, especially when responding to critical incidents.

Please note this is a fixed term post for 24 months.

Person specification - skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience required

Essential Criteria

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office.
  • Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience).
  • Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant industry and professional recognition and certification of achievement of skills and knowledge.
  • Experience of working in a team.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development. 
  • Ability to solve problems and resolve issues, plan solutions and make pragmatic decisions.
  • Experience of providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.
  • Ability to effectively network and exchange advice and information for development purposes.  
  • Experience of implementing policy and procedures.
  • High levels of self-motivation, initiative and ability to promote and demonstrate a flexible 'can do' attitude. 
  • Proven experience of assisting with the delivery, support and maintenance of IT services, including the ability to diagnose and resolve IT-related issues
  • Proven knowledge of Oracle or SQL Server relational databases and database programming using PL/SQL or TSQL.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to software development best practice including issue tracking, testing, documentation and version control.
  • Understanding of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) applications and/or other bespoke software deployed within the organisation in order to provide system configuration, audit, technical, and/or functional support.
  • Proven knowledge of Business Intelligence and reporting tools

  • ITIL Foundation
  • Knowledge of Unix/Linux OS including shell scripting.
  • Knowledge of HR, Payroll and Finance applications and processes

  • Some knowledge of frameworks and principles on which technology solutions are based, both on premises and cloud-based.
