Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing (Research & Teaching) /Mental Health Nursing Education (AEP)

It is one of two new posts supporting this programme.
We particularly seek applicants with experience and expertise of one or more of the following: integration of mental and physical health and/or stress and illness, dementia care/care of older people, nursing people with enduring health conditions, forensic mental health nursing.

King’s is the largest provider of health care education in Europe. Our Master of Nursing (Dual Award) pre-registration programme is due to start in September 2022. This pioneering degree was accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in December 2021 and is the first two-year, dual-registration (adult nursing and mental health nursing) postgraduate master’s award in the UK.

Owing to the agility of our Faculty and King’s we are able to consider applicants who are interested in either a Research and Teaching pathway (teaching and research) or Academic Education Pathway (predominantly teaching with scholarship).
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract pending successful completion of probation (3 years)
This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent. However, we offer flexibility for part-time working.
- Play an active role in the Faculty and King’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, focussed on the programmes, especially educational content outlined above and below. This will include module and where appropriate programme leadership, developing and delivering high quality innovative education and relevant materials, including incorporating King’s and Faculty research, pastoral support, supervision, and assessment and generating excellent student success and feedback.
- Have a clear forward plan for sustaining and enhancing Faculty education, PhD supervision, and research consistent with the Faculty strategy, including to increase research / evidence informed education, multi- and interdisciplinary endeavours, digital offerings and improved student success and experience.
- [If on R&T contract, with 40% teaching, 60% research] Contribute to and develop a sustainable, high quality applied health care research programme in areas core to one or more of the Faculty’s research Divisions or Institute and relevant to the educational focus of this post. You will work with relevant health care, charity, and industry/ commercial research partners.
Main other responsibilities
- Deliver outstanding education for the MNurs and other relevant programmes based on best evidence, health policy and research.
- Actively participate in, and plan and lead relevant modules and teaching programmes at King’s, with a strong focus on excellent student experience, in particular within, but not exclusive to, the MNurs programme.
- Seek opportunities for efficiencies across our modules and materials where material is relevant to other programmes.
- Communicate and collaborate with students, patients, families, the public, policy makers and clinical colleagues and in research and teaching, and its relevance to care and policy.
- Work in collaboration and partnership with key stakeholders, institutions, and organisations.
- Act as a Personal Tutor, Link Lecturer and Academic Assessor, and Module Lead, supervising and coordinating MSc, BSc Dissertation/Projects, research electives/placements to nurture capability building.
- Actively participate in marking, course and programme development and assessment
- Proactively communicate and collaborate with research and teaching staff within the Faculty, across the University, and where appropriate lead collaborative developments.
- Actively engage in Patient and Public Involvement, and imbed Patient and Public Involvement into all research projects and teaching endeavours.
- Engage with the media, press, publicity, policy makers, practitioners, and others to deliver impact of the research and teaching to the benefit of patients, families, and society.
- Play a broader role in the Faculty, contributing to the growth and development of our people and the wider organisation as appropriate to role.
- Actively participate in relevant audit and clinical governance activity, including audit of research and teaching activity, and team building activities
- Champion, model and uphold King’s values and principles, and maintain highest standards of adherence to data protection, ethical and research governance principles and practices
- Have and maintain a research passport, honorary contract if required and Good Clinical Practice in research
- Complete all mandatory training in line with Faculty and College expectations
- Undertake relevant professional development in negotiation with line manager and PDR discussions.
Research (if Research and Teaching contract):
- Contribute to the academic work of the Faculty, working with colleagues and clinical teams, with the aim of obtaining significant research funding and conducting research at an international and world-leading standard according to King’s performance framework
- Collaborate on, assist with and increasingly lead externally funded peer-reviewed collaborative research projects, programmes and fellowships, including winning funding from NIHR, UKRI, industrial/commercial funding and prestigious charities as co-investigator or Principal investigator
- Form and grow external collaborations to enhance the quality of reach of our research programmes, linking with world leading academics and groups in related fields.
- Supervise, co-supervise and nurture clinical and non-clinical researchers (including PhD students and fellowships) to build the field for the future.
- Publish research findings in high quality peer view journals, with 1 – 2 publications that are internationally excellent or world leading each year.
Research / Scholarship (if Academic Education contract):
- Co-author on one quality paper for a professional or academic journal or a book chapter relevant to Faculty research programmes or education innovations
- Actively collaborate with Faculty research themes to enhance research informed education and evidence-based practice
- Act as a collaborator to design innovations or projects to enhance research and integration with education
- Contribute to staff development activities e.g., presentations, sharing good practice
- Engage in scholarly activity including publication and conference presentation
- Actively engage in quality assurance and clinical governance activity
- Undertake professional development related to role and registration, and as set out in Faculty expectations
- Participate in a role or activity that contributes to academic citizenship

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria (Research and Teaching or Academic Education Pathway)
- Registration as a Mental Health Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Council UK or equivalent body. Up to date knowledge of the NMC standards for registration and education are a pre-requisite.
- Experience of the planning, delivery, and evaluation of high-quality education at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in education or practice setting with a strong focus on a high-quality student experience, success, and scholarship
- Expertise and experience in the integration of mental and physical health.
- Evidence of commitment to continued development in evidence-based practice, research methods and evidence relevant to care, with up-to-date knowledge, skills, and accomplishments, able to supervise MSc and undergraduate student projects and critically appraise a wide range of relevant research, including data presentation and basic analysis
- Ability to work well as an effective member of teams and networks and to share and encourage good practice in scholarship, teaching and research and to inspire and motivate others, including in challenging environments
- Excellent written, verbal, and digital communication skills, in all formats, face to face, presentation, email, reports, written and for teaching
- Excellent administrative and organisational skills, underpinned by strong interpersonal skills and personal effectiveness, able to deliver high quality work and projects to deadlines, work efficiently and prioritise appropriately, and take individual responsibility for planning and undertaking work.
- Publications, conference presentations and/or applicant on funding to support educational enhancement, service improvement, research and/or scholarship.

Essential criteria (Research and Teaching)
- PhD or equivalent relevant to healthcare and/or the research themes of the Faculty.
- Track record of peer-review publication and presentations that demonstrate international excellence or are world-leading in terms of originality, rigor, and significance in areas relevant to Faculty research themes and this role.
- Evidence of ability to secure research grant funding, demonstrated by previous experience or track record, involvement in research active teams, responsibilities, plans, awareness of funding schemes relevant to Faculty research themes.
- Evidence of continued development in research methods in health services or clinical research, with increasing expertise in specific areas relevant to the Faculty (e.g. statistics, implementation science, co-design, trial designs, mixed methods study designs and patient and public involvement).
Essential criteria (Academic Education Pathway)
- Master’s degree relevant to healthcare
- In depth understanding of education methods and approaches, including emerging digital learning
- Proven commitment to student learning and innovation, supporting student welfare, and enabling students’ personal and professional development, evidenced through providing academic advice and pastoral support.
Desirable criteria (Research and Teaching, Academic Education Pathway)
- Dual Registration: Registered Nurse - Adult and Mental Health with the Nursing & Midwifery Council UK or equivalent body
- Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice
- Experience of innovative and effective approaches to teaching, including distance learning, blended learning, digital learning and or simulation (virtual and/or face to face).
- Experience of co-leading/leading research projects, education activities or clinical service.
Desirable criteria (Research and Teaching)
- Experience of and training in PhD supervision, as first or second supervisory and/or as part of supervisory progression panels.
- Track record of winning and delivering successful externally funded grants, world leading or internationally excellent publications, and impact relevant to the field
Desirable criteria (Academic Education Pathway)
- Experience of teaching relevant subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with evidence of innovative and effective teaching, and ability to engage and inspire students of diverse backgrounds.
- Experience of course development, with creative approaches to assessment., providing robust, developmental, and constructive feedback at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels
