The Department of Architecture and Planning (IAP) is seeking a candidate for a position as Professor/Associate Professor in Urban and Regional Planning with special emphasis on engaging actively with the Sustainable Development Goals in the context of planning theory and practice.

IAP is one of four departments at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at NTNU. The department offers education at bachelor, master’s, and PhD level in Architecture, and at Master´s and PhD level in Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Ecological Planning, as well as Real Estate and Facilities Management. The department conducts research within the professional fields of the study programs as well as research on Smart Cities.

The successful candidate will be associated with the group in Urban and Regional Planning at IAP. The candidate will be responsible for teaching in the field of Urban and Regional Planning and is expected to actively contribute to research activities at the Institute as well as collaborating with other NTNU faculties and external partners.

You will report to the Head of department.

Responsibilities 

• Teaching and research in the field of Urban and Regional Planning.
• The management and development of high-quality teaching activities at the master's programmed in Urban and Regional Planning, and at other programmes offered by the department when required.
• Initiate and develop new research and engage in applications for external research funding, e.g., from the Research Council of Norway, European research and educational agencies, the industry sector, and other available resources.
• Conduct research on the level of international standards, coordinate research projects, and publish individually and in teams in international per-review journals.
• Supervise PhD students and engage in PhD education.
• Administrative work related to managing teaching and research.

Required qualifications 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Professor/Associate Professor in the field of Urban and Regional Planning, as outlined in § 1-2 (Professor) or § 1-4 (Associate Professor) of the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.

• Your PhD and scientific experience must be primarily in the field of Urban and Regional Planning or a field that is relevant within a planning system and its the procedures, formal rules, and laws.
• You must document profound research-based knowledge, or extended practice experience, or a combination of research and practice within urban and regional planning fields, as for example spatial and land use planning, urban mobility and transport planning, travel behavior, all with a clear focus on sustainable urban development.
• Documented research or practice experience within the context of the Norwegian Planning and Building Act or a Scandinavian planning system.
• Good written and oral communication in English

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.  

Preferred qualifications

• Master`s Degree in architecture, civil engineering or geography are preferred, candidates from other disciplines with relevant research and teaching experience in the field of urban and regional planning are also welcome to apply.
• Applicants that can document a combined experience from planning practice and research are appreciated.
• Research experience demonstrated through successful funds applications, coordination and participation in research projects, as well as publications and peer-review in scientific journals will be an added advantage.
• Good written and oral communication in a Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

Salary and conditions

A position as Associate Professor (code 1011) or Professor (code 1013) will typically receive a gross salary of between respectively 604 400 NOK – 825 900 NOK and 734 400 NOK – 977 600 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Employment will be granted in accordance with the principles outlined in the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. Applicants should be aware that there may be changes in the working environment after employment has commenced.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

While considering the best-qualified applicants, we will pay particular attention to personal qualities, your motivation for applying for the position, and your pedagogical skills and qualifications. Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
