Job description

We are looking for an experienced practitioner psychologist or accredited CBT therapist with an interest in teaching and training health professionals in diabetes focussed CBT (D-CBT). The successful candidate will take the lead in the production, planning, teaching, evaluating and accreditation processes of a new D-CBT. The programme will consist of two modules (in total 30 credits) and emphasises evidence-based and reflective practice. The post is primarily teaching and would be an excellent opportunity for clinical and academic staff seeking to widen their role. The post will be in partnership with and supported by the Diabetes, Endocrinology and Obesity Institute and the King’s Learning Academy King’s Health Partners (KHP). KHP is an academic health sciences centre aiming to bring together research, education, and clinical practice. The postholder will lead on the production, teaching and accreditation processes of a new D-CBT course. They will collaborate with existing members of the course team who have extensive academic and clinical experience in diabetes and associated mental health conditions.  

The course aims to develop CBT skills amongst clinicians (including doctors, nurses and dieticians) who provide diabetes education and care to patients. Specific areas of this include ensuring patient safety around diabetes self-management, adjusting insulin doses and monitoring acute diabetes complications (e.g. hypoglycaemia) while also delivering CBT informed care. The course is intended to help develop skills in delivering basic CBT to support people to have more effective self-management of type 1 and 2 diabetes for patients aged 16 and up.

 

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 1 year 

This is a part-time post - 20% (0.2) full time equivalent

 

Key responsibilities

•            To lead the development and day to day conduct of the Diabetes-CBT programme (D-CBT)  

•            To teach and assess the students’ clinical and academic competencies in D-CBT 

•            To support the dissemination of teaching and practice of D-CBT into the NHS 

•            To lead on the evaluation of the course and  

•            To ensure the modules are designed to be consistent with and contribute to CBT accreditation by appropriate professional bodies e.g. BABCP 

•            Development of curriculum, materials, lesson content and teaching using a blended model of virtual and face-to-face methods 

•            Supervision of students’ cases of D-CBT 

•            Giving support and guidance to students, in the capacity of a personal tutor 

•            Link person for site specific support for student to learn D-CBT 

•            Evaluating trainees’ clinical and academic competence in D-CBT 

•            Other related tasks agreed with the Course Director for King’s Learning Academy and commensurate with the post and grade.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

  • Fulfil the employees’ duties described in the health and safety policies and co-operate with the health and safety arrangements in place within the department.   • Comply with the hospital regulations, policies and procedures 
  • Where a candidate cannot demonstrate experience of teaching and /or they do not already hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, they will be required to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in HE if successful. Proven experience of teaching would include sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of teaching methods and techniques. 

Essential criteria  

  1. Entry-level qualification in Applied Psychology (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional training) that has been accepted by the HCPC for purposes of professional registration, and/or appropriate Psychotherapy qualification that confers registration and accreditation with the relevant accreditation body (e.g., BACP, BABCP, UKCP)  
  2. Knowledge and skills in teaching and training in CBT  
  3. Knowledge and skills in delivering CBT supervision  
  4. Evidence of CBT interventions in clinical practice with people with long term health conditions 
  5. At least two years in a job where CBT was one of your main treatment focus 
  6. Evidence of CBT interventions in clinical practice with people with long term health conditions 
  7. Experience of integrating CBT with medical conditions  
  8. Experience in leading or making significant contribution to training programmes in CBT   

Desirable criteria 

  1. Additional training in a specialised area of psychological practice through formal post-qualification training (PG Diploma or equivalent), OR a combination of specialist short courses, or an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice–based learning in a specialist area of clinical practice, assessed by an experienced clinical supervisor to be of equal level to a Postgraduate Diploma. (A/I/R) 
  2. Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, and/or registration as a psychotherapist (or high intensity CBT therapist) with the relevant accreditation body (e.g., BACP, BABCP, UKCP) with evidence of continuing professional development as required by the accreditation body. (A/I)
