Discipline of Rural and Remote Health

The Research Fellow is a senior member of the academic staff in the area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander male health and wellbeing in the Discipline of Rural and Remote Health Northern Territory.

This position is responsible for leading and managing a regionally, nationally and globally recognised thematic research area relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, with a particular focus on advancing the health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males. Ideally this will align with key focus areas relating to mental health and emotional wellbeing and primary health care.

This program of research will have an explicit applied public health and primary health care focus and will be informed by identified community needs throughout Australia, with a particular focus on the Northern Australia. This will necessitate the establishment and maintenance of strong and respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, services, and organisations.

The position will also contribute to the Flinders University Rural and Remote Health Strategy, including the four priority focus areas relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; education; research; and partnerships.

The Research Fellow will lead high-quality research, including attracting competitive research grants and other sources of funding. The position will also make high-impact national and global contributions to scholarship, policy and practice relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

The role will provide supervision and mentorship to Higher Degree Research students and early career researchers; independently conceive and lead research, including the co-ordination of high-performing research teams, and relevant national collaborations and networks; and contribute to organisational and sectoral leadership in relevant areas of expertise.

The Research Fellow will prioritise, coordinate, monitor workflow and provide informal day-to-day feedback to research support and academic teaching staff according to the University's policies, practices and standards

This position location is the Northern Territory and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Research Fellow will:

  • Provide research and evaluation leadership and management within allocated research and evaluation projects including project planning, ethics preparation, recruitment, fieldwork, data analysis and reporting.
  • Lead the development of new priorities and strategic research directions, including the submission of grant proposals.
  • Lead effective and efficient administration and project management of multiple local and national research and evaluation projects and networks, including policy adherence, and reporting to funding bodies, human research and ethics committees and stakeholders.
  • Lead, supervise and participate in high performing multi-disciplinary teams with an education and research focus and contribute to the development of a respectful, trusting, collaborative and harmonious working environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective and respectful research partnerships with key stakeholders, most importantly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, services and organisations.
  • Lead the preparation of high-quality academic papers and reports, suitable for peer-review and publication in top tier journals.
  • Provide direct supervision and mentorship to students and staff within the College of Medicine and Public Health, as directed.
  • Any other tasks as reasonably required by the Associate Professor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Male Health and Wellbeing; Rural and Remote Health NT.

Key Position Capabilities

  • Completion of a PhD, or equivalent qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing high-quality local, nationally relevant and independently led, research and evaluation projects relating to public health primary health in research and/or teaching institution of national standing. 
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, services and organisations.
  • Demonstrated experience in outstanding project management and evaluation in complex cross-cultural settings, including the adoption of effective community engagement and knowledge translation processes.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders including government agencies; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, services, organisations, and networks; non-government organisations; peak bodies; and practitioner groups.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and showing leadership and initiative within a research and evaluation context, to set priorities, coordinate tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated exemplary written and verbal communication skills with a proven track-record in writing high quality peer-reviewed scholarship and successful grants; and to present at national and international conferences.
  • Sound computer literacy skills.
  • The ability to maintain a current driver’s license and the willingness and ability to undertake inter and intrastate air or land travel, including to regional and remote locations, for up to one two weeks, six to eight times per year.
  • An understanding and awareness of relevant Workplace Health and Safety as well as Equal Opportunity principles and legislation along with a commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe workplace for all Flinders University staff, students, volunteers and visitors.
  • Demonstrated capacity to supervise staff and students, including honours and research higher degree students.

Prescribed Conditions for Employment 

Northern Territory Government legislation (the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007) now requires all individuals in child related employment or whose duties involve, or are likely to involve, contact with a child, to hold a valid ‘Working with Children Clearance’ (Ochre Card). This position involves child related work and is assessed as requiring a Working with Children Clearance/Ochre Card

A valid National Police Certificate which is satisfactory to the University will also be required before the successful applicant can commence in this position.
