Job Description

The SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute (“SDGHI”) was launched in September 2018 as a joint institute between SingHealth and Duke-NUS with a vision to advance health and well-being in Southeast Asia and beyond. The goals are to improve health outcomes, increase health security and strengthen health systems through partnerships with more than a dozen countries across the region. Through drawing together expertise across the partners, SDGHI works to align global health programming, acts as a coordinating mechanism for partnerships with national, regional and global actors and facilitates new areas of work in response to emerging global health priorities.

Outbreak preparedness and response has emerged as a major priority post COVID-19. SDGHI is working with Duke-NUS’ Signature Research Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases (“EID”) to leverage capacity across institutional partners and enhance the capacity for surveillance and genomic sequencing of current and potential pathogens across the region. The ability to identify pathogens at the human-animal interface can lead to novel and more effective methods for the detection, treatment, prevention and control of emerging diseases. A regional approach is critical for the health security of all countries. A ‘One Health’ approach supports cross-disciplinary research and programme work in human, animal and environmental health.

SDGHI/EID is recruiting a non-tenure Assistant/Associate Professor in Global Health to support emerging work to advance the One-Health agenda and regional health security.

The incumbent will support the following objectives: -

• Facilitate research and programmatic efforts to improve pathogen detection to advance health security across Asia. This includes fluency in epidemiology and human disease surveillance, zoonotic disease/veterinary science and ecology/environmental health.
• Serve as a global health focal point for research, teaching and programme activities within EID, connecting the programme to SDGHI’s wider global health efforts across the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre and with national/regional partners.
• Support capacity development efforts with Duke-NUS students (medical, masters, PhD) and regional partners.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

• PhD and/or MD equivalent in infectious disease epidemiology, global health, one health science or other related disciplines.  
• Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience designing and conducting independent research in One- Health related areas. Prior research and/or programme experience in low and middle-income countries would be an asset.
• Possess track record of conducting high-quality cross-disciplinary research with scientific contributions to peer-reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge of statistical analysis with competency using software packages (SPSS, Stata, R, etc).
• Evidence of teaching and capacity development in mentoring research staff/students.
• Prior experience in supporting capacity development efforts with governments and academic institutions would be an asset.
• Able to work flexibly, independently and mobilise resources.
• Have a strong desire to advance global health capacity in the Asian region.
