Grant-Funded Researcher (B/C) – Centre for Augmented Reasoning, AIML – Art Intelligence

(Level B) $100,933 to $119,391 or (Level C) $123,075 to $141,537 per annum plus an employer contribution of up to 17% superannuation will apply.

2 year Fixed term position available with the possibility of extension.

The advertised position is for an enthusiastic and highly motivated postdoctoral research scientist to develop the Art Intelligence program within the newly established Centre for Augmented Reasoning.

The Centre for Augmented Reasoning (CAR) is a $20M investment by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment in people and research supporting Advanced Reasoning research through grants and PhD scholarships, facilitating innovation and rapid commercialisation, and increasing AI literacy and engagement in Australia.

CAR is headquartered in AIML, at the University of Adelaide, and is supported by all the university infrastructure. AIML is Australia’s leading research institute in machine learning, artificial intelligence and computer vision with over 140 members including academics, research staff, and students.

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving their own research as well as contributing to team member’s projects. The postdoctoral researcher may contribute to the supervision of honours and/or postgraduate research projects within the field of the staff member's area of research. Additionally, they will contribute to the preparation or, where appropriate, individual preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies.

The Art Intelligence Agency postdoctoral researcher will work with world-renowned musicians and artists, to develop new ideas, algorithms and creations at the frontier of music, art and AI. You will be comfortable with ambiguity and have some basic level of understanding of music, being able to abstract problems and follow through experimental development, being divergent in the ways you address the problem. Working with world-class researchers in machine learning at AIML, you will publish impactful papers in deep learning areas such as music and voice generation, and natural language models.

This is an opportunity to firmly establish your research career working alongside some of the world’s best academics in machine learning and computer vision, and also work with world famous artists.

To be successful at Level B you will need:

  1. A PhD in machine learning, computer vision or related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  2. Programming experience and expertise in Python, Pytorch/Tensorflow, Linux or other relevant language.
  3. Demonstrated initiative and creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm for art and machine learning, with a basic level of understanding of music and experience working with real-valued timeseries data such as waveforms.
  4. Experience and demonstrable expert knowledge in one or more or the following areas: deep learning, probabilistic graphical models, active learning, causality, vision-and-language technology such as Visual Question Answering.
  5. Track record of publications in top-tier Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence conferences and/or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity.

In addition to the above, to be successful at Level C you will need:

  1. A strong track record of generating new ideas and quality research outputs, and of building new research directions and leading quality research programs in the area of machine learning, computer vision and/or artificial intelligence evidenced by one or more of: investigator roles in grants, contract research, consultancies, media coverage, joint publications with project partners, patents, commercialisations or other non-commercial outcomes.
  2. Demonstrated ability to attract competitive research funding.
