Chair of Spatial Information and Modelling
The Faculty of Environmental Sciences at TU Dresden and the Leibniz-Institut für ökologische Raumentwicklung e.V. (Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development) invite applications for the
Chair of Spatial Information and Modelling
associated with the Head of the Research AreaSpatial Information and Modelling at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER)
in a joint appointment procedure according to § 62 (2) of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG) to be filled by January 1, 2023.
The appointment is initially limited to five years. In the event of a positive evaluation by the IOER, the employment contract at the IOER is to be made permanent. For the duration of the employment relationship at IOER you (m/f/x) will be appointed to the chair and granted the status of a university lecturer at TU Dresden.
The Faculty of Environmental Sciences unites - unique in Germany - the three environmentally related scientific fields of forestry, geosciences and hydrosciences under one roof. The interdisciplinary and international orientation creates great synergy potentials. Overarching focal points are the monitoring and modelling of the Earth system at global, regional and local scales, as well as the sustainable development of the human habitat. For more than 20 years, there has been close cooperation with the IOER in research and teaching.
The IOER is a non-university research center and a member of the Leibniz Association. As a leading center for advanced spatial sustainability science, it develops cross-scale spatial information, analysis tools and knowledge, as well as policy- and planning instruments that enhance adaptive and transformative capacities in spatial contexts. To that effect, the Institute strives to elucidate the internal and external sustainability orientations of individuals, organizations and society, as well as their embeddedness in socio-ecological-technological spatial configurations. The IOER promotes gender equality and values the diversity of its team. It is certified by Total-E-Quality.
You will be responsible for managing the IOER research area "Spatial Information and Modelling", including the research data infrastructure "IOER-Monitor" located here. This will likely be expanded into a research data center from 2023 (subject to funding approval, with nine full-time positions on a permanent basis). At the same time, the subject area of "Spatial Information and Spatial Modelling" at TU Dresden is to be represented with two SWS. We expect you to be willing and able to teach in English. Teaching is to be provided in Master's degree programs at TU Dresden (in particular Spatial Development and Natural Resource Management, Geography, Geoinformatics Technologies). This includes the supervision of master theses and dissertations, especially within the framework of the Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS), which is run jointly with the IOER. We expect your active participation in the further development of the cooperation between TUD and IOER.
You should have an international reputation for outstanding scientific work in the field of spatial information and modelling and have experience in university teaching and supervision of young scientists. We expect comprehensive theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge in the following areas:
- monitoring and analysis methods of land use, settlement and building stock and ecosystem services in urban, regional and/or landscape development.
- spatial modelling and scenario development
- Innovative methods of geoinformatics (e.g. Spatial Data Science, GeoAI, Machine Learning, Explorative Geovisualization, Participatory Modelling, Decision Support Systems) to work on these aspects and in close connection with national and international (Research) Spatial Data Infrastructures.
We are looking for a personality with experience in the relevant subject areas and research fields, as well as a recognizably high demand for innovation in research and teaching. We expect suitable evidence for:
- success in the independent acquisition of third-party funding (especially DFG, BMBF, EU Horizon), project management and implementation.
- extensive publication activity in international peer-reviewed journals and other relevant media
- participation in international, European and national committees, associations and networks
- experience in staff management and in leading working groups
- ability to work together in an interdisciplinary manner, ability to work in a team, and strong social skills
- very good knowledge of English (C2) and German (at least C1); further language skills are an advantage.
You will be recruited at the IOER in Dresden and will be employed for an initial period of five years at the IOER on the basis of an employment contract under private law with remuneration corresponding to grade W2, salary scale W to § 34 of the Saxon Civil Pay Scale Act. You will take on scientific management tasks at the IOER. For the duration of the existence of the employment relationship on IOER, you will be appointed Professor of Spatial Information and Modelling at TUD and you are granted the membership status of a university lecturer at TUD. The appointment is made according to the Thuringian model pursuant to § 62 (2) of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG); no civil service or employment relationship is established with TUD. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 SächsHSFG.
