BES adopts a student-centred approach to address, effectively, the societal and scientific needs for understanding complex, modern environmental issues such as over-exploitation, pollution, climate change, land and water use, biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, and the building of liveable high-density cities.
The Department of Geography and the Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) Programme at the National University of Singapore (NUS) are seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer on the Educator Track to support the teaching of environmental studies and geography modules at undergraduate and graduate levels. We are particularly seeking an environmental scientist, physical and/or human geographer with broad interests in environmental studies. The Educator Track at NUS aims to attract, nurture, and retain suitably qualified and highly effective faculty members who approach teaching as a scholarly practice, and who therefore focus on and are passionate about excellence in teaching as a means of supporting student learning.
Teaching and Research interests:
The scope of teaching is within the broad topic of environmental geography, particularly around interdisciplinary and applied aspects of tropical environmental change, human-environment interactions, climate change and pollution. Teaching scope will include methods-based and field teaching. Specific sub-disciplines include, but are not limited to:
- Sustainability science
- Environmental policy
- Environmental social science
- Physical geography, related to sustainability and/or environmental issues in the tropics
- Applicants with experience working with governmental, non-governmental, grassroots and corporate partners are particularly encouraged.
Successful candidates are expected to teach 240 contact hours per academic year. The Department recognises that teaching has various guises and is not limited to the classroom. Other duties associated with the post include supervision of honours students and graduate students, and administrative service. While this is primarily a teaching-focused position, research (both pedagogic and disciplinary) is also encouraged. The anticipated start date is 1 July 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter, prior to the beginning of the new academic year commencing in August 2022. The appointment is for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension subject to performance review. NUS has a clear promotion pathway, including to Associate Professor and Professor on the educator track.
Criteria for appointment:
Although teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels is the primary focus of this position, those holding higher level appointments on the Educator Track are expected to demonstrate a scholarly, evidence-based approach to and reflection on teaching and student learning; a skillful approach that leads to deep, holistic, and self-directed learning; knowledge and experience of a range of pedagogical approaches; and contribution to advancing pedagogical and/or disciplinary knowledge through relevant inquiry or educational leadership.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in geography, environmental sciences or complementary disciplines at the time of the appointment.
Applications should comprise the following:
CV: An abridged CV (5-page maximum), including details on education, employment history, past experience of teaching and supervision, research activities (including publications) and achievements, honours and awards, and service accomplishments to date.
Scanned copies of academic degrees should be included.
- A Teaching Statement that commences with a preface (maximum 300 words) that makes the case for appointment. This should be a highly distilled summary of key contributions to student learning and, if applicable, educational leadership, guided by key points from the candidate’s teaching philosophy. The rest of the Statement should focus on outlining the teaching philosophy, providing evidence of a strong commitment to education and learning and, if applicable, innovation and leadership in teaching, and on future pedagogical plans. The latter might include an indication of modules that a candidate felt particularly well-qualified to teach. These may include one or more modules that are not at present offered by the Department.
- Teaching evaluations and peer review reports, if available. Other evidence of teaching excellence and/or other contributions to education, e.g. curriculum development, pedagogical innovation etc., should also be provided.
A Research Statement, if applicable, highlighting how a candidate plans to advance pedagogical and/or disciplinary knowledge through inquiry.
Note that the Teaching and Research statements combined should be no more than a maximum of 2500 words.
