King’s College London is Europe’s largest centre for the education of clinicians, dentists and healthcare professionals, with the largest medical student body in the UK. The latest REF results have confirmed King’s position as a leading research-led multi-faculty university. Under the new President & Principal, there is a very clear and consistent commitment to deliver an outstanding student experience across King’s. The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is looking to appoint to the post of Dean of Medical Education to lead the undergraduate medical education programmes at King’s College London.

Reporting to the Faculty’s Executive Dean, the Dean of Medical Education is responsible for the successful delivery of the undergraduate medical education programmes, working with colleagues within the Faculty, in the wider King’s College London community, and in partner NHS Trusts. The appointee will inspire students, staff and partners and will lead in delivering the next generation of physicians who are culturally competent, with global problem-solving mindset, and fully trained to make a positive contribution to clinical practice in the UK and globally. The appointee will lead a committed team, and will establish and enhance their network across King’s and also medical schools in the UK and beyond.

The Dean of Medical Education is responsible for ensuring that the medical programmes are at the forefront of pedagogical innovation, that learning outcomes are maximised for a highly diverse student body, and that medical students’ understanding and expertise in patient care and health are developed both nationally and internationally. The Faculty is establishing a medical school in the Southern University of Science & Technology (SUSTech) in China, and the appointee will collaborate closely with the new head of that entity.

The successful candidate will be an academic clinician with excellent strategic vision and leadership skills, and will bring personal authority and energy to the post. The successful candidate will be committed to engaging with and supporting King’s undergraduate medical students, and will be concerned with their wellbeing and learning outcomes. They will enjoy uniting teams behind a vision. They will have an extensive record of scholastic and clinical excellence in medical education, and a keen interest in pedagogical innovation.

Eighty-four per cent of research at King’s was deemed ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). The university is in the top seven UK universities for research earnings and has an overall annual income of more than £684 million.
