You will help lead an international collaboration of major universities and be a leading Technical Design Authority for the design and implementation of ‘System on Chip’ (SoC) reference designs using Arm-based IP. You will have, maintain and develop a deep technical knowledge of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) design flows and Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) design using Arm IP and various foundry technology nodes. It is essential you can evidence experience of software and hardware ability including undertaking simulations, design and all steps needed to ensure SoC systems implementation and testing and the development of any necessary test boards, firmware and software. You should be able to show demonstrable examples of your work on FPGA or ASIC designs.

Technically, you will have experience of implementing a SoC utilising IP from Arm including the Arm CPUs and Mali GPU, interconnect, peripherals and subsystems or similar but alternative IP blocks as a basis for a custom SoC and knowledge of one or more of the following areas, 1) mixed signal SoC combining analogue and digital functions with processing power from an embedded microcontroller, 2) multi-core systems with intersystem communication, 3) high speed communications device implementation would be highly desirable. You should have industrial experience in Electronic Design or a PhD, equivalent professional qualifications or equivalent and relevant experience.

As a technical leader, you will be able to manage projects to deadlines, be able to establish mechanisms for collaboration across a design team both on line and face to face, be able to lead technical discussions with authority and ensure project team members deliver their contributions to the joint design, test and fabrication tasks. Additionally, the electronics design industry is challenged to develop new sustainable and circular economy models for electronics while keeping up with the pace of demand for new and innovative products. You will be excited by the challenge of developing new design, test and verification techniques that provide more sustainable options than current methods.

About the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton.

The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and in the top 10 of the UK’s research-intensive universities. ECS is one of the first dedicated departments for electronics in the world dating back to 1947 and was rated 1st in the UK for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Guardian University Guide 2022). The first dedicated Microelectronics Research Group was founded in 1961 and created the first professional standard clean room in any university in the UK. Today it is home to one of the premium academic device fabrication facilities in Europe.

The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and being a globally responsible university and has recently been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.  Our vision is to embed the principles of sustainability into all aspects of our individual and collective work.  This also commits all of our staff and students to take responsibility for managing their activities to minimise harm to the environment.

We are committed to building an inclusive and diverse culture at the University and creating an environment where people can balance successful careers with their commitments and interests outside of work.  Our flexible working practices, including a hybrid working model, where employees can split their working time between the office and home, support our belief that this balance brings long-lasting benefits for our institution as well as our people. We believe equality and diversity are fundamental to making the University a vibrant, proud and successful organisation.  A diverse workforce, with people from different racial, educational and social backgrounds and a range of ages, opens up a wealth of possibilities for Southampton.

We are committed to improving equality for women in science and have been successful in achieving an Athena SWAN bronze award in April 2020.
