Key Roles & Responsibilities

Strategic Responsibilities

This role is expected to :

  • Contribute to the formulation of the CMHS’s strategy, with a focus on meeting KU and CMHS strategic goals in the areas of medical education and medical student support through the establishment and operation of research in the area of biotechnology.
  • Contribute to development of the CMHS’s policies and procedures, adhering to the overall objectives of Khalifa University, ensuring alignment to applicable regulations and standards and promoting leading practices and educational excellence.
  • Contribute to the study the genetic, chemical and physical attributes of cells, tissues and organisms, and identify practical uses for this knowledge related to immunology and molecular science.
  • Manage and mentor faculty, staff and students.

Operational Responsibilities

Leadership for developing and maintaining CMHS educational programs:

  • Supports CMHS accreditation processes and its program of continuous quality improvement
  • Supports CMHS educational programs by overseeing all aspects of research and development of programs within immunology, molecular science and biotechnology.  
  • Collaboratively working with others to foster a climate of academic excellence, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Works with the Dean of Research, the chair of Physiology and Immunology, and related faculty to plan, develop, implement, assess and improve courses, research programs and services that support the KU academic strategy and missions.
  • Ensures that medical student programs and services conform to laws, regulations, and policies of the United Arab Emirates, and comply with the ethics and corporate compliance policies within KU and the Abu Dhabi Department of Health.

Research Scope of Work

  • Create, conduct and monitor experiments using live organisms or biomolecular processes in a laboratory setting to solve problems, improve processes and develop new products.
  • Utilizse scientific knowledge to follow different methodologies to achieve results
  • Perform data analysis on experiments and interpret findings to support scientific investigations
  • Supervise students, faculty and staff in research initiatives
  • Record and disseminate results accurately in reports and via presentations as requested
  • Set up, maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment and computers
  • Work independently and collaboratively with other scientists
  • Work to health, safety and environmental regulations and meet quality standards
  • Maintain and build on current knowledge with new advances in biotechnology, bacteriology, immunology and molecr medicine
  • Develop new techniques, products or practices
  • Identify research funding and grant opportunities and potential collaborations with funding agencies, institutions, universities, and industries
  • Faculty is expected to publish in peer reviewed journals

Other Responsiblities

  • Participates and liaise with healthcare academic partners aligned for student education and research to potentially develop and execute embedded health system research and other research/development initiatives
  • Assist in the development of strategic partnerships within the KU programs and affiliated systems for interdependent research opportunities
  • Oversee existing and proposed cooperative programs within KU or external partners to ensure smooth operations, reporting and transitions related to research.
  • Monitor and analyse institutional research effectiveness through evaluation tools and dashboards for quality reporting.
  • Partner with other KU leaders to advance collaborative initiatives such as in data sciences, translational science, population health, outcomes research and health policy.
  • Plan and provide oversight of a portfolio of special projects to benefit the local and regional community of Abu Dhabi, and the United Arab Emirates.
  • Engage effectively with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure delivery of research project outcomes.


  • Works with the Dean, Associate Deans and Khalifa University’s Office of Research to promote and support research activities.
  • Supports and mentor’s office faculty, staff and students who participate in research.

Administrative & People Management

  • In consultation with the Dean and Associate Deans, actively works with the Office of Human Resources to recruit and retain high quality faculty and research staff.
  • Manages faculty, staff (direct reports if assigned) and students as required by defining job expectations; plans, monitors, and appraises performance; coaches, counsels and actively participates in the departmental employees’ on-boarding, mentoring and professional development.
  • Provides information or prepares reports as and when required.


  • Ensures adherence to the University's information security policies and procedures, and reports breaches or other security risks accordingly.
  • Ensures coordination with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed.
  • Performs any other tasks assigned by the Dean and his line managers.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides coaching, guidance and mentoring of faculty, staff and students as required to enhance the internal capabilities of the team and ensures the achievement of established objectives and plans.
  • Recommends appropriate training courses as per pre-determined training needs, evaluates their effectiveness, and monitors their results.
  • Carries out performance appraisals for subordinates according to planned schedules and recommends necessary actions as per applied practices.
  • Conducts periodic meetings with subordinates to ensure that priorities are clear and workflow is running smoothly.
  • Follows-up on employees' administrative affairs such as vacations, leaves and other administrative and related affairs as required.


Qualifications & Experience


Required Qualifications

  • MD and/or PhD in a relevant field of study
  • Qualified for faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher
  • Prior leadership role in medical education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior leadership in leading reseach, and interfacing with students at all academic levels
  • Demonstrable accomplishments in teaching, research, healthcare delivery, and/or service at a level commensurate of Assistant Professor or above.


Required Experiences

  • Strong record reflecting excellence in research, education, history of clinical practice, and or administration.
  • Proven management experience, requisite expertise in working collaboratively with faculty members, staff, medicine professionals, and students.  Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, and a thorough understanding of university structure and culture are essential.
  • Demonstrable ethical behavior, professionalism, interpersonal skills, leadership and management abilities that are sufficient to effectively direct and develop staff and students.

Preferred Experiences

  • Five (5) or more  years of experience in medical student education, medical student support services, and research communities.
  • Familiarity or experience with an education institution in the Middle East.
