Job description

The Department of Geography, King’s College London invites applications for a Lecturer in Sustainable Cities. The successful applicant will make teaching contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching - particularly the MSc Sustainable Cities - including in-person and online lecturing, supervision, marking and academic and pastoral support of students. They will also be expected to undertake individual and collaborative research, contributing to Urban Futures, one of five research groups in the Department. Candidates should hold a PhD and have a developing international research profile in human geography or a cognate social science discipline such as anthropology, sociology, socio-legal studies, political science, public policy, international development, planning, or cultural studies. We particularly welcome applicants with an ability to engage in interdisciplinary research with other research groups in the department, or work across the human/physical divide on matters of environmental sustainability, resilience, or urban ecologies (broadly defined). Expertise in one or more of the following fields is desirable: environmental racisms and justice in the city, urban resource management, urban energy use, urban climate adaptation, sustainable infrastructures, smart cities and technopolitics, urban socio-natures, green transport initiatives, urban resilience and adaptation, feminist urban planning, social sustainability and social inclusion in cities. We encourage applicants from the full spectrum of empirical methodological expertise, including quantitative methods and ‘big data’, qualitative methods and mixed methods approaches. 

 

The Lectureship is an open-ended position with a probation period, which is usually three years. This post will report to the Head of Department of Geography. The Lecturer will receive mentoring and support to develop their skills and experience in education, academic administration, and research.

This post will be offered on a full-time, indefinite contract.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Development of teaching materials suitable for delivery both online and in-person (blended teaching)  
  • Teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students: in class, online, in computing laboratories and in the field as necessary 
  • Personal and academic tutorial delivery for all stages of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes for in-person and online cohorts 
  • Departmental Administrative roles as appropriate for career stage  
  • Research, publication and research grant application for research that contributes to the Urban Futures research grouping 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria 

1.       PhD awarded in Human Geography or a relevant cognate discipline (awarded before starting the post) 

2.       Excellent knowledge and understanding of the field of urban studies, especially in relation to questions of sustainability, broadly defined 

3.       Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills 

4.       Excellent administrative and organisational skills 

5.       The ability to design and deliver lectures, practicals, seminars and tutorials in the specified fields of expertise 

6.       Experience of teaching relevant subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with evidence of innovative and effective teaching and ability to engage and inspire students of diverse and international backgrounds 

7.       Experience of assessment procedures in Higher Education and providing excellent feedback on assessment 

8.       Evidence of ability to communicate research effectively in the form of publishable journal articles, chapters or conference papers 

9.       An interdisciplinary mindset in education and research, and aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary framework, including teaching across disciplines and beyond the immediate field of expertise 

10.     A demonstrable commitment to an inclusive, diverse and collegial approach to education and research. 

 

Desirable criteria 

1.       Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice. Those without this will need to complete this in their first year in post. 

2.       Completion of appropriate training in equal opportunities, diversity, and inclusion. Those without this will need to complete this in their first year in post. 

3.       Experience of academic administration  

4.       Experience of providing academic advice and pastoral support to students 

 

Short-listed candidates will be invited to a staff presentation (virtual) followed by an online interview, which will start with a five-minute presentation (5 slides) on their approaches to teaching and research.
