You will join our UKRI Future Leaders Fellow Dr Christina Vanderwel on the project “Simulating air pollution in the lab”. The aim of this research is to apply novel laboratory techniques to simulate wind patterns and air pollution in urban areas. Experiments will be conducted in the University of Southampton’s wind and water tunnel facilities using state-of-the-art laser diagnostics. There will also be opportunities to supervise graduate students and to get involved in other projects in experimental fluid mechanics including turbulent boundary layers, flow control, atmospheric flows, and diagnostics development.
The Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics (AFM) research group is comprised of experts in theoretical, computational and experimental fluid mechanics and our aim is to provide an environment in which these different approaches can be combined and focused on particular topics of practical importance. You will join a vibrant team of other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working in different areas of fluid mechanics ranging from environmental flows to biomedical applications.
You will have (or within six months of completion) a PhD in fluid mechanics and turbulence or equivalent professional qualifications and experience along with strong communication skills both verbally and in writing. Experience with experimental work is critical and knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication of models is desirable.
