Job Description

The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, is inviting applications from suitable candidates in the field of Asian legal studies to carry out research relevant to our programmes and objectives and to help with the work of the centre. CALS values scholarship employing a wide range of methodologies (doctrinal, empirical, theoretical, comparative, etc.) and in all fields of law relating to Asia. Subject areas of particular interest are comparative public law in Asia, aspects of law in China/Greater China; law and religion in Asia; and comparisons of common and civil law jurisdictions or two or more civil law jurisdictions in Asia.  Applicants with quantitative backgrounds in empirical research are also encouraged to apply.

DUTIES

  • Subject to the standard NUS terms as to annual leave, appointed candidates will be expected to be in residence throughout the term of their appointments.
  • An appointee will be expected to develop a research agenda related to or adjacent to one of the above themes, including undertaking substantial research projects leading to publication during the term of the appointment. Such research may include, but is not limited to, the writing of articles for publication in refereed journals, contributing to book chapters in edited collections, and preparing a monograph or other book for publication. An appointee will also be expected to assist in other CALS research projects and initiatives as assigned by the Centre Director.
  • Appointees will be required to present their ongoing research, and to participate in and contribute to CALS events.

Requirements

 

  1. An ideal candidate would be of exceptional calibre have attained an Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area of law:
    • For appointment as a Research Assistant, the successful applicant must have at least an LLB or equivalent qualification, with reasonable knowledge, skills and expertise in Asian legal studies.
  2. The principal selection criterion will be the applicant’s potential for excellence in research. Existing research work in CALS-related areas will be considered favourably. The applicant should submit a research plan proposal for consideration.
  3. The candidate should be exceptionally organized and have an eye for detail. In addition to scholarship, which is a high priority for the position, there will also be administrative responsibilities related to the work of the centre. A strong command of English is required.

  • academic transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies (if studying for a current degree, please include a list of current courses);
  • the names and contact details of at least two referees who may be contacted for a reference;
  • a statement detailing the research plans for the next one to two years.
