Under the leadership of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Katie Normington De Montfort University (DMU) is embarking on a mission to empower its student and staff communities in its delivery of an excellent student experience and the creation of a fairer society. To support the delivery of its ambitions, the university is seeking to appoint new independent governors to its Board of Governors.

DMU is an ambitious, globally minded and culturally rich university with a strong commitment to the public good. We strive to maintain a stimulating and inclusive environment that champions difference and celebrates success. Our university is a vibrant, multicultural hub of learning, creativity and innovation that was named the first-ever ‘University of the Year for Social Inclusion’ by The Times Good University Guide.

The board seeks to appoint up to four independent governors, one of whom it is hoped will chair its Finance and Performance Committee. Applications are encouraged from individuals who can demonstrate significant current or recent experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Further education, with experience at a senior level;
  • Finance and Performance Committee Chair – a qualified accountant with Finance Director or equivalent experience;
  • Audit, with experience at a senior level;
  • An understanding of the Ofsted Framework, in particular in relation to Adult Education programmes and Apprenticeships;
  • Business, organisational and associated digital transformation and the commercial application of new technology solutions.

As independent governors and trustees, you will be expected to attend five ordinary board meetings per annum. The board delegates certain responsibilities to its five sub-committees and there is an expectation that governors also sit on at least one of these, which meet between once and four times per annum. The Finance and Performance Committee usually meets four times per annum.

In addition to board business, you will have the opportunity to engage with students and staff, and to be part of some the special events in our academic calendar.

The initial term of office for independent governors is three years, renewable for a maximum of two further terms of three years, subject to the continued support of the board.

You will have a passion for education and the role it plays in transforming lives, and embody a commitment to good governance and the Nolan Principles of Public Life. You will be prepared to dedicate the time required to contribute at the highest level of the university, utilising your professional expertise to support, question and challenge the Vice-Chancellor and their team.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and meet the ‘fit and proper’ person requirements set out by the Office for Students.
