About the role

This position will be an appointment in UNE’s School of Environmental and Rural Science with a focus on research, including co-supervision of Higher Degree Research (PhD and research Masters) students. The appointee will act as a post-doctoral research fellow in sheep methane studies with a focus on practical ways to reduce methane emissions from sheep in grazing systems. The work is substantively funded by Australian Wool Innovation along with the federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. Future funding is highly likely to also come from Meat and Livestock Australia via their sheep meat program of work.

The appointee will specifically focus on research relating to the use of commercially available anti - methanogenic supplements including red algae, Bovaer along with other emerging supplements. The studies will be part of a coordinated approach to reducing methane emissions in grazing systems being orchestrated by the University of New England. This collaboration includes work being done with the University of Western Australia, and the  South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI). The work will include pen and methane chamber work with sheep to help inform grazing system research both at UNE and on commercial properties. A demonstrated ability to design and implement robust analysis of data from pen and grazing studies will be required. A history of publication is important as well as experience communicating with producers will be an advantage.

A willingness to join and work enthusiastically with the existing research team is essential. To that end it is essential that you sometimes travel to farm project sites across the State and participate in fieldwork (sometimes extensive and over weekends) for data collection when required. You will work within the project’s leadership team to help design and guide experiments, collect data, process and analyse data, critically evaluate project results, and publish findings in high quality journals. Together with other members of the leadership team, you will be responsible for reporting on project milestones. You will work with partners from collaborating organisations, and use your excellent communication skills to provide training and capacity building support to research and technical staff as well as stakeholders in methane measurement and associated productivity measurements. Sensitivity to others’ ways of interacting and working will be a valuable skill.

You will be part of a great team of project researchers and technical staff, including several early career researchers. We have a positive and supportive work environment. The appointee will be supported to develop their career through on-the-job and other training opportunities, such as conferences and professional workshops
