Job Description

The successful candidate will work with Antonia Monteiro, at DBS, NUS, on a NRF funded research project on “Finding the locus of evolution of a novel complex trait”. This is a project that aims to explore the evolutionary origins of the eyespot gene regulatory network in butterflies. It sits at the intersection of evolutionary biology and developmental biology.

The main responsibilities of the position include

  • Testing the function of a series of cis-regulatory elements (CREs) in the butterfly Bicyclus anynana. 
  • Integrating plasmid constructs into the genome of Bicyclus anynana of using a piggyback transposable element system. 
  • Testing the role of some CREs using CRISPR-Cas9. The aim is to delete these regulatory regions from the genome of butterflies and see how this affects the wing patterns. 
  • Performing immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridizations with butterfly wing discs and embryos

Qualifications

  • Qualifications / Discipline:
    • Bachelor of Science Degree, or Master’s degree in Life Sciences or related disciplines
  • Skills:
    • Experience with molecular biology, cloning, PCR, fluorescence miscroscopy, confocal microscopy, in situ hybridization, and/or CRISPR-Cas9 (or as many of these skills as possible)
  • Experience:  
    • Previous research experience in a molecular lab (honors research project is fine)
