You will join the research group of Dr. Giuseppe Pileio to work on cell cultures on 3D-printed scaffoldings for a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust concerning the development of theory and methodology to study nuclear spins diffusing in porous media. The team is formed by two Professors, a Research fellow and a PhD student to work towards the development of new diffusion-NMR based techniques to access structural information such as tortuosity and perform singlet-assisted diffusion tensor imaging investigations in 3D-printed scaffoldings for tissue engineering. The project combines long-lived spin order methods with pulsed-field gradient techniques and field-cycling and is supported by Bruker that, in the first part of this project, helped us developing an ad-hoc NMR probe which offers RF and 3D-axis gradient capabilities at 10mT magnetic field.

Your primary role will be to take charge of cell culture on 3D-printed scaffoldings, including their characterisation through SEM, Raman, confocal microscopy etc. You will also be involved in NMR/MRI experiments on those systems. The laboratory is equipped with a perfusion bioreactor customised for cell cultures on 3D-printed scaffoldings. More information are available on request.

To be successful it is essential you have a PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biomedicine, Biophysics or other project related subjects. Experience with cell culture is also essential.  Experience with SEM, Raman, confocal microscopy and NMR/MRI is also desirable but not essential.  Practice with cell culture on scaffoldings is desirable but not essential.

The Magnetic Resonance Section offers a huge expertise spanning from NMR theory to methodology in solid and liquid state, microfluidics and protein NMR. Our facilities include a 300MHz, two 400MHz, a 500MHz, three 600MHz and a 700MHz NMR magnet with equipment for solid-state, liquid-state and micro-imaging applications.
