The University of Southampton’s vision for 2030 is that sustainability will be a part of everything it does, encompassing individual behaviours, how we work together, and how we make decisions for the future. This is key to achieving our mission of changing the world for the better and delivering on the University Strategy.

The University’s Strategic Plan – Sustainability (2020-2025) forms a key contribution to this delivery and has defined a programme of work (the Sustainability Implementation Programme) to achieve our sustainability ambitions. The cross-University Sustainability Implementation Group (SIG) has been tasked with setting and leading the Sustainability Implementation Programme under the oversight of the University’s Sustainability Strategy Board.

The purpose of this role is to support the Goals of the University’s Strategic Plan – Sustainability and the SIG’s delivery of the Programme Goals by refining and developing the University’s ISO5000 accredited Environmental Management System (EMS) to enable:

  • Efficient and reproducible monitoring and assessment of Goal progress at appropriate timescales;
  • Per-goal reporting and data quality control/scrutiny;
  • Efficient and reproducible collation and presentation of data and information as inputs to other processes such as ranking returns or performance audits.

You will work closely with the University’s Estates & Facilities and will establish reproducible analytic pipelines/processes using existing sustainability related data flows and embedding appropriate protocols and processes in the University’s EMS to ensure future delivery on an ongoing basis. The work will also include robust data gap reviews, high quality data analysis and development of a sustainability data dashboard.

The role will also include engagement with stakeholders to define future iterations and updates to the EMS system. This is your chance to help develop a 22nd Century data architecture to propel the University towards a sustainable future.

There are a great range of benefits that includes a contributory pension scheme; holiday entitlement of 30 days plus 8 bank holidays and 6 additional holidays (closure days); subsidised health and fitness facilities on-site; cycle to work scheme; a range of discounts which include restaurants, retail outlets and entertainment.

We will give due consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy*, and onsite childcare facilities.
