Birmingham City University has a simple mission – we enable our students to transform their lives and to achieve their potential.

Through our education and research, and the roles our graduates go on to play in the world, we not only support individuals to transform their lives, but we also play a part in transforming society.

We are extremely proud of our city, of the part we have played in its past and in how we are a part of its ongoing renaissance. Just as for almost 180 years we have helped meet the demands of the economy and society around us, so too today we are a huge part of the changing face of Birmingham, the region, and the world.

The £340m we have recently invested in our city centre campuses shows how we are building on this civic heritage, not resting on it. We are determined to empower the next generation with the skills they need to flourish in a digital and ever-changing global environment.

Our passionate BCU community – including our talented and diverse staff and students – together with the demand we are seeing from those wanting to study with us, and our strong financial position, underpin why ours is a uniquely exciting university, where ambitious people can expect to thrive.

To help us accelerate into the years ahead, we are appointing eight leadership roles across the University’s four faculties including the Head of School of Computing and Digital Technology in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment.

The faculty builds on Birmingham’s heritage as the cradle of Britain’s scientific and technological revolution to empower the next generation of makers, thinkers and disruptors. Based at the City Centre Campus, our two schools are home to 4,000 students. Our research has a strongly applied focus and aims to tackle society’s toughest challenges with the ingenuity and practicality for which the Midlands is famed.

The School of Computing and Digital Technology applies abstract intelligence to making a better, safer, smarter society. Our focus on nurturing work-ready graduates is reflected in our high-quality teaching, our industry-standard facilities and our strong relationships with industry partners including Microsoft and Cisco Systems.

As our Head you will provide effective strategic leadership of the school in the areas of learning and teaching, research, enterprise and wider engagement. You will foster and develop the strong relationships already in existence.  You will lead on the development of an inclusive, industry relevant portfolio of courses; and you will build a working environment that is supportive of staff and encourages active engagement and a positive contribution from individuals.

Candidates will be able to demonstrate the ability to lead in a collaborative, supportive way, that builds teams and brings colleagues on board with your vision. You will need the skill to advocate for the school’s interests whilst also ensuring that they are in alignment with the faculty and university’s wider strategic agenda. Importantly, your student-centred approach means that every decision you make puts students at the heart of everything, giving them the best opportunities for future success.

Above all, we are looking for candidates who are passionate about BCU’s mission and our brand new I AM BCU values and are experienced in providing supportive leadership in a changing sector.
