Project description
A 3.5 year PhD studentship (covering fees and an enhanced stipend, 20% above the usual level) is available for a UK student to work in high speed external aerodynamics. The research will use an existing CFD code (written in Python and C++) that will be extended during the research. Navier-Stokes simulations will be conducted to investigate three-dimensional effects of turbulent and transitional flow over curved surfaces and flow control, for example via vortex generators. The project will also involve an evaluation of the effects of thermo-chemical non-equilibrium. High speed flows of this type, potentially with shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions are at the cutting edge of modern simulation technology. The project represents an exciting opportunity to work with next-generation computational flow solvers using the full capability of high-performance computers and addressing large-scale three-dimensional time-dependent problems in aerodynamics. The successful candidate, who must be a UK national, will have a strong background in compressible flow and computational modelling. The project is financially supported via Dstl and there is also an (optional) opportunity to spend up to 12 weeks in industry as part of the work. https://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/about/staff/nds9.page
