Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor Recruitment in Materials Science and Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China sincerely invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

We seek ambitious and creative candidates who have the vision and capability of carrying out interdisciplinary research, and contribute to the collegial and collaborative environment of the department. We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong record in our strategic areas of Electronic Information Materials and Devices or Computational Materials.

Established in July 2013, Materials Science and Engineering Department is a member of the first batch of departments set up by Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). It has preliminarily built a high-level and internationalized faculty with 40 tenured/tenure-track members, including 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 international academicians, 22 overseas high-level talents, 1 distinguished expert of the Ministry of Education, 4 “national distinguished young scholars”, 1 “national excellent young scholars, 1 winner of “truth-seeking outstanding young scholars” award and 1 winner of “Scientific Exploration Award”. 40% of professors are among the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2021.

The MSE Department focuses on four research directions, including electronic information materials and devices, energy and environment materials, biological and medical materials, advanced manufacturing and characterization. It not only aims to build a world-class talent cultivation and scientific research base, but also closely follows the industrial layout of Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City. Up to now, it has published more than 2,200 SCI papers in journals such as Nature and Science, carried out more than 205 municipal, provincial and national scientific research projects and founded 19 municipal and provincial scientific research platforms. It has successfully incubated 10 high-tech companies through technology investment and joint laboratory.

In 2021, the MSE Department was approved as an authorized unit for the first-class discipline of materials science and engineering by Ministry of Education and established a talent cultivation system for bachelor degree, master degree and doctor degree.

Southern University of Science and Technology (“SUSTech”) is a new public research university with high starting point and high positioning, which was established in Shenzhen under the background of the higher education reform and development in China. Learning from the discipline settings and school-running models of the world-class universities of science and engineering, SUSTech focuses on science, engineering and medicine and has a discipline system of business and characteristic humanities and social sciences. At present, SUSTech has recruited 1,310 teachers, including 55 academicians (36 full-time academicians who are recruited and cultivated independently), 54 international fellows, 37 distinguished experts of the Ministry of Education, 14 experts of “the National Special Support Program”, 41 winners of Distinguished Young Scholars Fund of National Natural Science Foundation of China” and 25 winners of Outstanding Young Scholars Fund of National Natural Science Foundation of China. Over 90% of teaching and scientific research staff have overseas working experience, over 60% of them have working or studying experience in the top 100 universities worldwide, and the high-level talents account for about 65% of the teaching staff.

SUSTech has been approved to build 78 scientific research platforms at all levels, including 2 national scientific research platform and 26 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 published in September 2021, it ranked the ninth among the universities of Chinese Mainland and the top ten universities in Chinese Mainland for consecutive four years. In particular, the citation index of papers of SUSTech ranked the first in Chinese Mainland, and its international perspective index ranked the third in Chinese Mainland. In February 2022, SUSTech was selected into the new round of “Double First-Class” university project list.

Currently, SUSTech has 9,069 students, including 4,543 undergraduates and 4,526 postgraduates and doctors. It has established 7 doctoral programs and 15 master programs and concluded agreements with many overseas universities (including University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, National University of Singapore, University of British Columbia, University of Queensland, etc.) to jointly cultivate doctoral students.
