Job description

Purpose of the Post  

 

Dr Sarah Mizielinska is seeking to appoint an organised and enthusiastic research assistant to develop a novel drug screening system in collaboration with a pharmaceutical company partner. Dr Sarah Mizielinska’s group research nucleocytoplasmic transport dysfunction related to RNA-binding protein proteinopathies, sharing common focus on the two neurodegenerative diseases frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This position will involve significant work in molecular biology, cell culture and microscopy.
 

You will join a research group based within the UK Dementia Research Institute (DRI) centre that is embedded within the Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience at King’s College London (  www.kcl.ac.uk/ioppn/depts/bcn/dri/lab-groups) within the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute on the Denmark Hill campus. The DRI is a national consortium focused on cutting-edge dementia research funded by the Medical Research Council, Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK (  www.ukdri.co.uk).   

 

This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract to the 31st May 2023 with the possibility of a further extension. 

This is a full-time  post - 100% full time equivalent

 

Key responsibilities

  • Molecular biology, cell culture and microscopy techniques associated with the project   
  • Maintenance of cell and stem cell cultures  
  • Analysis, presentation, and communication of research findings 
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory records 
  • Manage the ordering of laboratory supplies  
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by Dr Mizielinska 
  • May require flexibility for occasional weekend work (feeding stem cell cultures)

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

 

Essential criteria  

  1. BSc. In Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience or related biological programme
  2. Solid foundation knowledge in molecular and cellular biology 
  3. Experience in cell culture 
  4. Well-developed organisational and communication skills 
  5. Computer literate, able to use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and willing to learn new software 

Desirable criteria

  1. MSc. In Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, or related field 
  2. Understanding genetics and methods of genetic engineering (CRISPR etc.) 
  3. Experience in microscopy 
  4. Experience in induced pluripotent stem cell culture and differentiation 
  5. Understanding and or/experience in CRISPR gene editing 
  6. Managing multiple tasks concurrently
