Sport

Durham University is one of Europe’s leading sport universities and has been ranked as Britain’s Number 1 Team Sport University since 2013. In the autumn of 2019 the University completed the construction of a £32m Sports & Wellbeing Park, adding to a prior investment, on the same site, of £8m in 2012. We are proud to have the largest participation programme in the country ‘College Sport’ and our facility is the home to a number of local community clubs and groups.

Performance Analysis

Durham University has an established high performance athlete support programme aimed at providing high quality services to student athletes. Performance analysis is a key component of the programme and the successful candidate will work closely with both teams and individuals to deliver a service that meets the requirements of the student athletes and sport specific programme leads. This will include producing benchmarking, cumulative statistics, minutes played and injury data. Furthermore the postholder will code and analyse opposition footage, maintain equipment and develop an intern programme and volunteer opportunities in conjunction with the Student Enrichment Directorate strategy.

Core responsibilities:

Act as more knowledgeable team member without responsibility for team members.

  • Plan and organise own workload with or without involvement with project work streams.
  • Resolve queries and requests for information and advice and escalate more specialist and complex queries or issues to more experienced team members.
  • Respond to stakeholder needs to deliver and shape an excellent stakeholder experience.
  • Apply theory and practice, from academic and professional development and previous knowledge within a support service team.
  • Work collaboratively across the organisation and/or externally with colleagues and stakeholders to deliver performance analysis.
  • Provide guidance and advice to resolve problems and queries for a broad range of service users.
  • Collaborate with team members to implement service alterations.
  • Organise and schedule resources, activities and events, with a focus on performance sport fixtures.
  • Identify priorities and monitor processes and activities to ensure success.
  • Provide more in-depth independent research and analysis activities within the role.
  • Analyse work activities to ensure the effective and efficient use of capital and consumable equipment and resources.
  • Provide demonstrations and instruction to others outside the team.
  • Support the capture of business requirements from users and work with colleagues to translate these into recommendations for future service provision.
  • Liaise with contacts and participate in networks and communities internally and possibly externally, contributing to effective collaborative working.
  • Advise others and make recommendations into work processes and procedures for consideration by senior management to improve services.

Role responsibilities:

  • Deliver support services to ensure the effective and efficient running of outreach, internal and external activities that enhance the Durham reputation.
  • Monitor feedback and identify service changes to meet service level agreements.
  • Collaborate within the service team and across other services to ensure the seamless provision of products and services.
  • Contribute to service user engagement, promotion and communication activities, events and presentation with or without team members.
  • Welcome and induct external service providers, contractors and specialists to deliver a range of opportunities, activities and events to enhance the reputation of Durham.
  • Identify and expand the service user knowledge base for service desk working and update team members on changes.
  • Liaise across the organisation to update and exchange key service information to ensure advice given to users is the most up to date and accurate.
  • Implement and update processes and procedures, including related documentation where appropriate.
  • Work with internal and external partners and suppliers to deliver cross-functional products and services.
  • Accurately record information and data and disseminate within internal networks
  • Support the management and coordination of activities, conferences and/or events.
  • Act as first point of contact for student welfare issues where required.
  • Prepare written reports for consideration by management where required.
  • Any other reasonable duties.

Person specification - skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience required

Essential Criteria:

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
  2. Proven IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office.
  3. Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience).
  4. Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience.
  5. BSc Sports Science/Performance Analyst (or equivalent).
  6. Experience of using appropriate analysis software.
  7. Experience of using a performance management application.
  8. Evidence of personal development to maintain skills.
  9. Experience of working with a range of sports.
  10. Relevant experience in a similar role/environment.
  11. Demonstable ability to proactively work with team members to ensure the delivery of high quality services.
  12. Ability to solve problems as part of a team and resolve issues, plan solutions and make pragmatic decisions.
  13. Ability to effectively network and exchange advice and information for development purposes.
  14. Ability to contribute to planning at operational level.

Desirable Criteria:

  1. Experience of the British University sports system.
  2. Experience of rugby and hockey performance analysis.
  3. An understanding of the needs of students competing at a high level in performance sport.
